Why is Cernunnos so Popular in Wicca?
« on: October 27, 2016, 10:39:35 am »
This is for a course I am on, and the question asks why Cernunnos or Herne is so popular in Wicca. I've read a little about Margaret Murray's writing and her influence on the Wiccan community in this area, but can't find much more. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Blessed Be!

Honestly, I suspect it's nothing deeper than "the public handle for the traditional Wiccan god figure is 'The Horned God' and 'Cernunnos' means 'horned'."

Mainly because he's probably the most recognized "horned God". Other horned gods would be Pan. But, I'm not sure how much influence Pan has in Wicca.

Pan is actually the origin point for the horned god concept, if I'm remembering Hutton correctly.  He was huge with the Romantics and in the classical influence on the pagan soup.

This, plus I get the impression that since we have so little archaeological evidence about Cernunnos other than the one verified depiction (that I know of) he effectively becomes a "horned god" that can fit the needs of modern Wicca without a lot of the baggage of extensive historical documentation.

Er, not really. :whis:

Have fun with this paper I'm linking to!

And this one.

The first is as well-researched as the second, but not as long. It also has less of an academic *feel* to it, though it's still, again, well-researched and an excellent resource.
