Which Goddess has strong Moon connections
« on: June 12, 2013, 02:22:02 am »
And is connected to Cats, Magic, Witches, herbal healing, altered states through herb or plant use, the colors purple and green, water especially waterfalls, small creeks and springs, long hair, sexuality, and whose presence is comforting and even motherly, also has associations with dragons and fairies, Spring especially the time around Ostara and I am probably forgetting some other things she likes or is associated with. Maybe I am simply not hearing or getting who she is cause I am confusing myself, maybe it is more than one being who I am describing. Any help or ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks to anyone who replies!

My, that is a long list. Are you looking for a goddess who's connected to all of those things, or some of them...? Any particular pantheons you favor?

All or some, maybe that is why I am having trouble. I know I have a connection to a Goddess I can feel her but I cannot identify her and I want to know who she is to better tailor my worship or honoring of her. Maybe I have connections with different Goddesses at different times I have been on my path for 20 years and the general nameless goddess idea no longer resonates to me as much as it used to. I am struggling to determine who it is that wants me and is willing to be my patron. I feel like my growth in my path would benefit from her name and history. Now I sound repetitive so I'll stop here. Thanks for your questions. Hope my answer clarified my question and no I am not sure of what pantheon I am looking for. I am an American mutt (my Mom used to say we were Heinz 57 because of no one specific culture we came from)with bits from all over Europe and a bit of Native American mixed together.
I am searching myself both through reading many myths and by trying to meditate to (hear) figure this out but no luck so far. Thank again!

That combination sounds very modern, like "the Goddess" of eclectic forms of neo-paganism. Not that that's a bad thing, it just might be difficult to find an ancient goddess with all of those specific associations. Freyja of the Norse pantheon comes to mind, but I don't know about the colours, the waterfalls, and the dragons and fairies. Such a goddess might be difficult to find with everything on your list.

Have you considered asking the Goddess if she'd like to reveal Herself? When I read the title, Selene (Σελήνη) came to my mind as she's the main Greek Goddess of moon. Her name itself means «moon». However, when I read your description I was a little confused.

Bolded ones remind me of Hecate, but still I can't really tell if she's the one (and I don't think so, unless there are more that one Goddesses and she could be one of them).

I might be completely wrong on this, but here's a thought: Persephone is highly connected to springtime. The colours purple and green suit her, at least it's how I feel it. Green because of the spring, purple because she's the Queen of the Underworld. I've read that she is associated with spring, waterfalls, rivers, and springs (x). The «comforting and motherly presence» totally suits to her mother, Demeter. There's this myth, also, where she is associated with Hecate, who I mentioned above.
Quote
«Hekate assisted Demeter in her search for Persephone, guiding her through the night with flaming torches. After the mother-daughter reunion became she Persephone's minister and companion in Haides.»
I'm still confused though !

I'm confused too and I might be bunching too many things together. I guess I need to meditate on it some more and maybe narrow down what I am searching for and understand that there is not a Goddess who fits with everything I have ever experienced in my personal practice. Also I think I may be over thinking everything. and trying to hard to fit it all under one hat so to speak. I flip back and forth on hard verses soft polytheism. and most of my practice has been very neo-wiccan leaning since I am self taught and most material especially in the 90's was neo-wicca. The period when I bought 101 books like a crazy nut. Anyway thanks again to all who replied and if anyone else has more idea or information I would welcome it, but I realize no one but myself can tell me what my path is or should be. Sometimes I can be a bit fluffy in my thinking. I am still working on that....

Which of the associations in that list do you feel are the MOST important ones? Spring? The moon? Magic? Long hair? How does she present herself to you? In what way is she associated with fae and dragons? You can definitely use the information you have here as a starting point to understand her even better.

And to second Ariadne above me, yes, by all means ask Her what Her opinion is on the subject. She might tell you her name, or tell you not to worry about it, or give you another clue.

I think my love of dragons and fae folk are not as important to her as to me. I have been working on rethinking and de-fluffing my ideas. :)
When I was new to my path I felt (believed) Bast was calling to me because of my connection to cats. About 8 or 10 years ago I lost my miracle cat (who Bast herself healed) as in lost, he disappeared not died, during a chaotic move. I felt like she was upset with me and maybe I have fallen from her favor due to a long period of spiritual inactivity and the cost was my favorite kitty. I have loved each of my cats very much but he was special. I still grieve over his loss.
I have never explored Kemetic practices as I always thought it sounded like tons of very hard work and when I see altars of people who follow Kemetic paths they are very clutter free, simple and elegant. my personal style is more of a messy cottage garden type and I am not always comfortable with cultures too far from my own so I feel I have held myself back some. Maybe reconstructionist type stuff is not for me or maybe I need to push myself harder.
Sorry if my reply is disjointed I seem to have a summer bug or head cold today so am even more fuzzy than normal.

I have thought Hecate has brushed my life for a bit in my past.(that is another story and part of why I get confused)
Bast seems to be around a bit recently through a couple of indicators. A new friend gave me a cat statue and another  new friend told me his patron is Bast and he is from England and was in a traditional Witchcraft coven (little t). So I may want to reconnect with her and see how it goes.

That combination sounds very modern, like "the Goddess" of eclectic forms of neo-paganism. Not that that's a bad thing, it just might be difficult to find an ancient goddess with all of those specific associations.

There's also the point that not all of those are terribly meaningful associations.  "This god has always appeared to me with long hair", for example, does not make an entity a god of long hair - and if a god has some level of actual interest in a hairstyle, it's going to be because it has some significance within that deity's framework of being, some deeper symbological meaning, or something that actually matters.

Or color associations - I don't know about green off the top of my head, but purple is, historically speaking, one of the sine qua non dyes of expensive expensiveness, which is why it's associated with royalty.  If you want a historical power associated with purple, that's the sort of limitation it's got; if, instead, it's 'I have this association because of what purple means to me', then, well, that's not association work that anyone else in the world will be able to help with.  And, like the hair, it could just be a random thing, in any case.

"Dragons and fairies" is a different kind of category.  What kind of dragon?  What is the affiliated symbology?  Eastern or Western?  (How many toes?)  What does it do?  What kind of fairy lore is coming into play?  Little people with wings?  Fallen angels?  The glorified and restless dead?  Elemental/nature powers?  What do they do?  What are the connections that come into play here, and how do they seem to matter?

Yes it is mostly things that stand out to me personally and not what is important necessarily to Her, I think, thanks for your insight, you cut right through the fluff for me and made me realize I was looking for my point of view not trying to hear Hers. As far as the fae and dragon lore go I enjoy learning about any and all of them but for fae I work most with plant devas in my garden. For dragons I think it is a love of Pern (fictional fantasy land of Dragons) that influenced me most but I do have a western-ish Dragon tattooed on my left calf and around my ankle and have a relationship with it.
He does not want to eat sacrificed virgins as far as I have been able to understand him. Anyway great questions and points as I said. I always seem to inject foot in mouth when I write about my stuff mostly cause I have fluffy tendencies and fuzzy thinking, yet my path is real and important to me, I stop short of complete fluffy as I don't think I'm part wolf or fae or other type or otherkin. :) Anyway thanks for your help!

For what it's worth, when I first read your post I thought "Bast", but since I know next to nothing about Egyptian deities, I decided not to answer.

Thank you for your input. I am going to focus on my relationship with Her and see where it leads me for now. She may have a use for me and I deeply desire to be connected to deity on some level. Now comes the fun part research and actual ritual. If it blows up in my face I will look in a different direction but for now I feel like She is with me, and actually wants to help me on my path.

The parts that aren't could be the OP projecting their preferences upon the vision (as the OP mentioned regarding their liking of dragons and fairy lore), or the deity in question "reading" them and using them to present themselves in a more easily-understood manner. In addition, we do have to take into account that the myths didn't capture everything.
I have some working UPG of Hekate, though my fiancée has considerably more. I think she might be whom the OP is describing. But this is just my opinion.

Mhm, I agree. It's just the fact that I've never had any experiences with Her so I rely mostly on what I've read on TC.

Maybe She doesn't have a name as such, I must admit the first thought that came to mind as I read your post was maybe it's the Great Mother Nature you're really 'in tune' with?  That list embraces so many great parts of life. I know that's a really simple answer to a very big question (forgive me this is my first post here heh).

Anyway, the point is, (in my opinion) many of the G/goddesses who have ever existed whether true or imagined were conjured one way or another from the earth we stand on. There are so many who are related to fertility and water, do a search with Fertility + Goddess + Water and see if any of the pictures stand out to you. Read a few lines and see if any of them call out to you. I've always had a soft spot for Inanna (no idea why) hopefully I'll find out one day :).

Good luck in your quest, you'll learn some fantastic things on the journey!
