Making a little space for Loki?
« on: March 09, 2014, 09:17:08 am »
Hey all, I've done it now.

Last afternoon, I posted a thread about my workings with runes, and specifically stated that I do not work with the Norse pantheon, and they don't have any interest in me.

Well, that night, I was reading runes about a relationship with a friend. This young woman and I have a lot in common, but we've drifted apart. I asked what the best course of action was. Usually, I specifically envision myself as addressing one of my goddesses. This time I failed to do so, and the runes I drew seemed to indicate a very decisive course of action. They were very, very suggestive that I should expect to "sacrifice" my friendship with this young woman (whose company I do value) to better my development.

It didn't seem like very good advice. I returned the runes to the bag and tried another reading, but this one came out completely nonsensical. At this point, I suspected I was being messed with, and I had a strong suspicion of who was doing it.

Loki. The only Norse god I've ever been interested in. You see, Thor is far too physical in nature, and Odin too intimidating, and I have simply never connected with the goddesses.

I continued working with the runes, trying to make sense of things, but I continued to get strange replies. I asked "Are you Loki?" I drew Rad reversed, twice. I had asked a yes or no question, but this actually seemed to be a qualified "no, I'm not telling you!" Finally, I took my crystal necklace as a pendulum and asked. The answer was yes, it was Loki.

As I went about my evening, I felt strangely "charged," and in the mood for trouble. I'm glad I live alone. I don't want to think what I'd have done! Finally, as I was preparing to go to sleep, I felt a great sense of release, like I was being let go from an obligation. I know it was Loki taking his leave. I'm pretty sure he'll be back. He indicated that he wanted to help with the runes.

My question (and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get to it...) is about others' experiences with Loki. I plan on setting him up a small corner in my bedroom, but I have no idea how to decorate it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am going on a shopping trip with this friend I mentioned earlier...(which is why I was asking about her to the runes) and I want to know if there's anything in particular I should pick up.

PS: In case anyone is wondering, I *did* get an answer from the runes once I invoked one of my main goddesses first. She indicated that I was on the right path, but that I would soon know whether this friendship would last or not. Which make sense, since both of us are graduating in May,

It's probably not the answer you were looking for, but in my little slice of the universe Loki is nothing but bad news and one should run, not walk, in the other direction. It's on record that the divines would pay Loki off not to show up. There's no chance whatsoever of he/she/them* being welcome in my house or having a shrine.

I'm sure others will disagree with me and that's fine. This is just my 2¢

That's fine. I'm feeling somewhat uneasy about it myself. I'm aware that he's often very disruptive, and definitely a troublemaker. I certainly don't plan on having the same kind of intimate relationship with him as I do with my goddesses. My plan with the altar was basically more to propitiate him than honor him - make sure he doesn't get pissed off at me and make trouble.

ETA: I didn't get the feeling that he was being malicious or hateful. It just seemed like I'd irked him, and he wanted to cause some trouble. Like he was stirring things up just to get a reaction.

First of all, let me say your thread has an interesting timing to me because I've been thinking of making a space for Loki (again).

Second of all, my experiences with Loki have been extremely positive. My relationship with him over the years has a lot of elements to it, but I am comfortable in saying that he's pretty much like a close friend to me. He does, however, like to pull your leg and you're never too sure if he's telling the whole truth or part of the truth.

He can be a very persistent god, but also a very sympathetic one and a great ally if you let him be. Of course, he can be a trouble maker but also keep in mind that his trouble brought both gifts and chaos, so he isn't wholly evil just because he is a trouble maker. Be respectful but also a little cautious.

As for suggestions, I'm not sure. What are you looking for exactly? Because I can tell you he's commonly associated with fire (and sometimes air), and his colors can vary but most seem to use red for him, and tacky things tend to go well for him, and hearts and sweets, and spicy things and homemade things, art, poetry, etc etc and I'm not sure any of it would really help you out at all without an idea of what you're looking for in particular.

You might also want to look at the resources on theemperorsfeather page for Loki. They might be extremely useful for you.

Wow I sound like such a Loki's Advocate, I'm not sorry.

Thank you. Yeah, his visitation last night - the reading he gave me - seemed pretty much like he was trying to provoke me. I'm sure he wasn't being malicious or really trying to make me suddenly break with this friend. After all, I *knew* right away that something wasn't right when I got that reading.

I'm not sure I'll be working with him a lot right now. I know he's a trickster and a force of chaos, and that's definitely a useful connection to have, because there are times in my life when I withdraw far too much and become emotionally and psychologically stagnant. Rather like being stuck in a rut, but far more negative. I think being able to call on a deity who can really shake things up would help at those times.

Right now, I'm not looking on actively seeking his help. I'm getting a lot done and moving forward in my life. However, I would like for him to have a spot in my home, so he knows I haven't forgotten about him, and so I also make clear that he's welcome if he wants to come.

A few years ago I was at a stree fair and picked up a multi colored wooden musical frog (do not know why, not my thing).  I took it home things got disrupted and broken.  I asked the Frog its name it said Loki, I took it to work, it seemed to like my workplace, which was going though changes.  I did not like the changes, but after Loki came the changed again and I like those changes, it also produced a serenity I was looking for.

I put it on a clear space I had on my alter there and would come in the next with the other things on the alter out of place.  I finialy put Loki in the center and things have not been out of place.

A few ideas of things appropriate for Loki:
  • symbols of fire and fiery colors (red, orange, yellow)
  • anything related to subterfuge or disguise  (masks, costume pieces, etc)
  • any strongly flavored food, spicy or sweet
  • items related to games of chance, particularly those where deception is key
  • items related to stage magic and/or sleight of hand
  • items that are humorous or playful, including small toys
  • any kind of candy or sweets

Loki be trolling. XD

I've had some interesting experiences with Loki, to say the least. It's funny, because I just recently started honoring him again, after an almost two year hiatus due to a situation where my friend got a little screwed over due to my dealings with him. He personally did not harm me, and there's levels more complexities at play, but long story short, I stayed abreast of Loki out of loyalty to my friend, but never got the closure that I needed. Plus, I still felt inexplicably drawn to him, until one day I just said "screw it" and spoke to him again, because I realized I need to be upright and honest about my feelings, no matter how guilt-ridden. After that, I felt a giant load shrug off my shoulders, and a few days later, my friend told me that she had something of a heart to heart with Loki and pretty much gave me the go ahead to work with him again if my little heart desired.

It didn't take long before I was lighting the incense, the candles, and making offerings. I just couldn't stay away, apparently.

But I would caution you to be mindful, as well. While he is easy to talk to, and I feel more myself around him than any other deity, there's also a very terrifying side of him that I have seen, and it's earth-moving.

On the more positive end, he's a real hoot if you approach with a sense of humor.

As for offerings, my go-to offering (for any deity) is booze, but that can be expensive (and I ran out of the good stuff), so lately, I've been giving sweets. I'm not too helpful regarding altar decorations, though. It's clutter chaos (which I suppose is appropriate) but I really do need to reorganize. XD

I'd like to make a note that Loki can be pretty loud if he's seeking your attention. He's always been the kind of god that would drop his name in places on me or something would be said/seen that had an interesting timing. It gets worst if you're not listening or don't notice them, but he usually stops once you notice them.

Just keep this in mind when you're dealing with him. He can answer you and it can be annoying or not-so-subtle. ._. Because right in your face seems to be Loki's middle name.

That indeed sums up what he's been doing to me for the past couple of *weeks* likely...I'm actually beginning to believe he's been trying to get my attention for a while, and the incident with the runes was simply him making things explicit.

For example, I've been...misplacing....things. Part of this was that my ADHD medication was at too low a dose, but even at its higher dose, I've noticed that things are still going missing. To be fair, I'm quite a slatternly housekeeper. I *prefer* clutter, as it is more comforting to my eyes. But I'm also quite adept at remembering where things are in the piles of stuff, and I generally don't lose things for long.

I've lost a chunk of pyrite that I had carelessly left on the floor. As well, I spilled my favorite runes on the floor in roughly the same area(I have 3 sets). I collected most of them, but even after crawling around on my hands and knees looking, about 4 are still  missing. Last night, I left my lapis lazuli in my bed when I went to sleep. This morning, I can't find it. I'm pretty sure it's fallen off onto the floor...in the same area where everything else has vanished. And just like for everything else, I've gotten down on my hands and knees and crawled, combing through the clutter. None of it is there.

So I've set Loki up an altar in the corner in this general area, right next to my nightstand. In case anyone was wondering, the runes incident took place when I was lounging in bed, preparing to go to sleep. So he definitely seems to stick to that area - the south of my apartment. (South - associated with fire in both Western and Eastern magical traditions!)

I just had a very nice conversation with him, using the pendulum. He urged me to let him give a rune reading, and I drew Ur/Uruz, or strength. I'm still new at interpreting, but I looked it up, and it seemed to portend the need to have courage as an old life is cast off and a new one is begun.

Well, I am graduating in May and moving out of my little apartment. The whole process is incredibly intimidating, and to a large extent, I've shut out all thoughts of the transition from my mind. It just scares me. I asked him for his help. As a force of chaos and misrule, I've come to realize that he's probably the best one to help me ride through such a time of change.

Well in some Western trads maybe  - but not all ;)

Good luck with Loki - that is one who I hope never notices me

Thanks for pointing that out; I was being over-general in that statement. :) To be fair, it's probably not associated with fire in all eastern traditions, just the one I'm acquainted with...
