Offerings for Thoth
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:09:05 pm »
I'm planning on working with Thoth, the ancient Egyptian God of Knowledge and Magic, here in the next few evenings. Customarily, when I work with deities, I like to offer an offering. Has anybody made an offering to this specific God in the past, or have any idea what to offer? I've looked online and in my various books but can not find anything! I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Josh

The only thing I've ever offered to Djehuty was Japanese water candy, which is completely UPG, and I don't know if He even likes it.

Staple offerings for Kemetic gods are water, lighting candles and incense/essential oil/scent of some kind.

Writing implements seem to be a common offering to Djehuty, but I've heard he tends to want them to be used not just sitting there collecting dust.

I've also heard that Djehuty likes tea and oranges as offerings.
I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

I've done a ritual to him, water, bread, wine all worked well IMO.  Although, I'm thinking a good tea might be a great idea and will probably offer that the next time I do a ritual to him.

I'm devoted to Djehuty among others, and I honor Him as a patron of my profession (graphic design.) After Wepwawet, He's one of the deities I make the most offerings to. In fact, his shrine is one of those on my desk, to the left of my computer.

UPG ahoy: I've found He likes me to call on Him with lots of epithets. There's a list of them here, as well as one devotee's experiences here.

I've found He likes good tea and coffee. I especially offer Him Darjeeling and Earl Grey tea. He seems to like mint, raspberry, toffee, apricot, peach, and almond as flavors. He also likes dark chocolate, and combinations of all of the above. (So mochas go over well.) I offer frankincense and citrus incense. (For me, He seems to lean more towards "lemony" citrus than to "orange" citrus, but YMMV. Could also be I just associate orange much more strongly with Wepwawet. I'm getting a "ping" that yes, He would also accept orange.)

I also honor him with writing, studying, and graphic design. Although Wepwawet has seemed more interested in my work with ceremonial magic and Thelema, I approached Djehuty before I started studying it.

I also see Him as the Great Diplomat - one of His epithets is "He who calms the angry tongues." Very useful when working in customer service, and even more useful when working to become more aware of my speech and stop the damage I sometimes do with my words.

I also found this website useful when starting to work with Him.

That does seem to be his MO.  There are plenty of stories of him doing precisely that, such as helping reconcile Horus and Set.
