Sirona and the Lady of the Stars
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:50:49 pm »
Apologies if I'm going over ground that others have already covered, but I was just reading some of the threads on the "Lady of the Stars" and didn't see any mention of Sirona, a Gaulish goddess whose name actually means "starry":

http://www.celtnet.org.uk/gods_s/sirona.html

As you can see from this link, she has several points of overlap with Brighid, including the healing and snake associations and the link with Minerva in Gallo-Roman religion. Sirona was only known in Gaul, the Gaels never worshiped her. However, Brian Wright's "Brigid" book quotes a traditional prayer describing Brighid as "She who put beam in moon and sun" (pg 128). Seeing as the sun is a star, I would personally see this as strong support for seeing Brighid as an equivalent deity to Sirona in some sense, and for seeing Brighid as the "Lady of the Stars."

I can't be sure, but I think NibbleKat did mention her within the context of that discussion, though I may be remembering conversations that were held outside of the forum (there were a couple of social groups that may not have made it into archives). She is the only person I can remember involved in the LotS that has any kind of relationship with Sirona, so I would be surprised if she hadn't spoken up about it.

But I agree some of the similarities are pretty striking!

Although I do not worship any deities (yet) Sirona is one of the few I've felt a pull towards. I can't find much on her though.

Because there is not much to find.

Some links in German to add a bit to the little (hope the translator won't mess them up too much for you, in case it does - just get back to me):

All the information basically boils down to: Nightsky, otherworld, egg, snake, stars and partnered with Grannus.
