Hestia
« on: September 30, 2011, 02:45:54 pm »
I was wondering about how one would go about sacrificing food to Hestia? Do you have an offering bowl to burn a portion of your meal to her? I feel this strong pull with her lately and would like to see how other interact with her.

Thank you.

I don't have any personal experience with worshipping Hestia but this is a link that has a good slice of the info you are looking for:

http://www.wiggage.com/witch/hestia.html

It has links, analysis of her nature and personal how-to-do's by Her devotee.

Thank you for that. It helped out a bit.

You are welcome - on the same site, there's an exercise called Hestia's Ladder to connect to Her Hearth fire and let it run throught your chackras. You may find that interesting.

Also, as Hestia worship seems to be prominent in Feri, maybe you will have better luck by checking out other Feri links.

Thank you.

The ancient Greeks offered her a part of their daily meal by burning it in the hearth fire, as well as offering her a portion of each sacrifice when honouring the other heavenly gods.

In modern practice, lighting a candle for her and burning incense are good ways to honour her easily, although you could still burn part of your meal for her if you have a large enough sacred flame. Personally, I burn a white candle for her and recite her Orphic hymn, sometimes offering her incense and libations, but I use the candle mostly for daily worship.

This is the hymn I use:

Daughter of Rhea,
Venerable Guardian of the Unwearying Flame,
The ministers of the sacred rites are Thine, mystics much blessed and holy.
The Gods have fixed their dwelling place in Thee,
Strong, Stable basis of the mortal race,
Many-Formed, eternal, laughing, blessed,
Lovely Queen, ever Scarlet One,
Accept these rites, accord to each of us just desires, gentle health, and needful goodness.

I've never thought of looking into Feri but I will now. Thank you.

Thank you. I have a green melon scented candle that I like to burn for her. I normally burn it when I bake or cook. What do you offer for libation if you don't mind me asking?

Clean water, natural fruit juice, sometimes my morning green tea, that kind of thing. Wine is a good traditional libation too, but I don't drink much, myself.

I would definitely also recommend the Valerie Walker article you linked, and pretty much all her stuff. But...while *she* definitely has a devotion to Hestia, it doesn't seem (from my non-initiate experience) to be common to all of Feri. Still might be something to look into, though.
