Janus

I'm just looking to see whether there's anyone out there following Janus Pater. He's come back into my consciousness recently and I want to explore his cult a bit further by inquiring into others' experiences and knowledge of him.

Janus is one of the deities that the religious witchcraft circle I trained with worked with regularly at full moons - I recently touched base with him again for ritual as I have new students. So, I'm coming from a 'historically informed but very much modern religious witchcraft practice' on things, if that's helpful to you?

One of the things I've loved about my ritual interactions with him is the sense of spaciousness of time.

(With my Doctor Who fanbrain, it's a bit like standing in the Tardis must be: all that potential, forwards and backwards and sideways, and some structures and limits and practical issues, and that sense of 'bigger on the inside'. Bigger. Quieter. No need to hurry unless you really want to.)

I've also always appreciated the sense I've gotten in my work with him of change over time - you look at some of the Roman practices about him, about beginning and ending of wars, and the opening of the gates, and how marking the start and end of things matters, but that they're also connected, and you can't lose the connection.

I’m glad to hear that there are fellow witches working with him. One aspect of his energy I find delightful is the way he slips between faces. The fluidity of his aspect appeals to me because I find it to be reflective of the ways in which we as witches work with the in-betweenness and irresolution of selves. I’m also interested in his relationship with the god Saturn and with Hekate. Are you familiar with Proclus’s hymn to Janus and Hekate?

I need to work with him in my magic a bit more thoroughly. Wish I had the funds or supplies to set up a proper altar to him. I’ll see what I can do with what I have.

That's something I've always appreciated, yes.

I read it back when I was training, but that was 10+ years ago now (and for various reasons, the parallel working with Hecate is not applicable for us (the explanation for which requires a lot of background))

My own experience with him has been very focused not on altar items or things, but on whether and how I'm being attentive to issues of self-awareness, potential, choices, and the flow of time in my life - certainly, in my practices, he gets offerings in ritual if he's invited, but other altar or shrine-stuff has been a lot less physically focused for him compared to some other deities I've worked with.
