Medicine Buddha
« on: May 31, 2015, 02:21:23 am »
Since I've become a Reiki practitioner I have gained an interest in the Medicine Buddha. I have read a few books about him which I really enjoyed and have got some meditations and mantras but I would like to know more from people who honor him or have worked with him in the past. I know he often works alongside Kwan Yin but apart from that I don't really know how he works or anything about his personality.

Can anybody help me out?

Well, he's a Buddha, so technically he doesn't have a "personality" in the sense of an ego or concrete, immutable personal characteristics. According to Mahayana Buddhism, Buddhas transcend individuality.

The Medicine Buddha is associated with Lapis Lazuli in Tibetan Buddhist lore. He is portrayed as being a deep blue, and is said to have a Pure Land or Buddhist Paradise, just like the more famous Amitayus/Amida.

KARMA: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Here is a dharani of Medicine Buddha. It's called the Uṣṇīṣa Vijaya Dhāraṇī Sūtra. This is the Sanskrit version. Some notes about Sanskrit if you choose to recite it... ś ṣ are pronounced sh; c is pronounced ch; ā is pronounced ah; ū is pronounced oo; ī is pronounced ee; ē is pronounced ey. Other vowels are pronounced with a short sound.

This is a nice version.

namo bhagavate trailokya prativiśiṣṭaya buddhāya bhagavate.
tadyathā, om, viśodhaya viśodhaya, asama-sama
samantāvabhāsa-spharana gati gahana svabhāva viśuddhe,
abhiṣiňcatu mām. sugata vara vacana amṛta abhiṣekai mahā mantra-padai.
āhara āhara āyuh saṃ-dhāraṇi. śodhaya śodhaya gagana viśuddhe.
uṣṇīṣa vijaya viśuddhe sahasra-raśmi sam-codite.
sarva tathāgata avalokani ṣaṭ-pāramitā-paripūrani.
sarva tathāgata mati daśa-bhūmi prati-ṣṭhite.
sarva tathāgata hṛdaya adhiṣṭhānādhiṣṭhita mahā-mudre.
vajra kāya sam-hatana viśuddhe.
sarvāvaraṇa apāya-durgati pari viśuddhe, prati-nivartaya āyuh śuddhe.
samaya adhiṣṭhite. maṇi maṇi mahā maṇi.
tathatā bhūta-koṭi pariśuddhe. visphuṭa buddhi śuddhe.
jaya jaya, vijaya vijaya. smara smara, sarva buddha adhiṣṭhita śuddhe,
vajri vajragarbhe vajram bhavatu mama śarīram.
sarva sattvānām ca kāya pari viśuddhe. sarva gati pariśuddhe.
sarva tathāgata siƱca me samāśvāsayantu.
sarva tathāgata samāśvāsa adhiṣṭhite.
budhya budhya, vibudhya vibudhya,
bodhaya bodhaya, vibodhaya vibodhaya samanta pariśuddhe.
sarva tathāgata hṛdaya adhiṣṭhānādhiṣṭhita mahā-mudre svāhā.

There doesn't seem to be an English translation anywhere.
