I'm just curious about why Math Mathonwy needed to rest his feet in the lap of a virgin or he'd die.  What would inspire that tale or what is it a metaphor for?

It's most likely a Celtic thing in which the footholder represents the Sovereignty and the king has to follow certain taboos to retain the right to rule.
