Information Search: Pereplut
« on: May 12, 2013, 10:53:42 am »
Hey All. I'm trying to find information on this particular Slavic goddess for...strategic sheep purposes and I'm having a bit of a hard time. I did a google search and came up with not much aside from video game references and few blurbs here and there.

Hoping maybe someone who works with the Slavic pantheon can maybe point me in a good direction?

He keeps me with all of his other pretty things for I am just another pretty thing in a long list of acquisitions.

Hi Dionysiandame,

And let me tell you first of all that it is a god :) If it were a goddess, she would be called Perepluta, I guess.

Unfortunately, I can't say there is much information about him in the Cyrillic part of the web. He was briefly mentioned in the writings of two orthodox saints, John Chrysostom and Gregory of Nazianzus (both of them lived in the 4th century), but it isn't quite clear now what they meant; either he was honored by drinking from horns, or people praised him while performing a circle dance (roundelay or khorovod) and drinking. The name itself might mean "swim or sail across"; at the same time, the last syllable, "plut", simply means swindler, rogue, or trickster, so needless to say, everyone who is going to deal with him should be very careful. Nobody knows for sure about his place in the pantheon. He might be the Slavic Dionysus, a chthonic spirit, god of fertility or of the sea - at least these are the most popular assumptions. I would also pay attention to how the name sounds - it reminds me of Priapus, Plutus and Pluto, all three affiliated with fertility. The first one was a well-known trickster, closely connected with drinking, singing, dances and, let us say, other frolics in the orchards. And besides, his wooden images were often placed on the seashores and served as protectors for sailors and fishermen. Too many a coincidence, don't you think?

I hope this will help you one way or another.

P.S. I have also found one image:
http://myfhology.info/gods/slavyans/pereplut.html
It is present-day and depicts Pereplut in the role of a sea god, so I don't think it is a good representation of him in all his might :)
