Leto
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:23:58 am »
Does anyone here honor her, or has any experiences with her?

Aside from what one can read on theoi.com or Wikipedia, the information about her is relatively scarce. As far as I see, she was mostly worshiped as the mother of the Twins, although her origins and syncretism ideas regarding her are... interesting.

A while ago, I had a series of dreams featuring her, which eventually led me to her son. And yet, Leto herself intrigues me still. So, any information, whether academic sources or UPG experiences, would be welcomed.

I know that The Divine Twins writes a bit about her, as he is involved with Apollon (the twin reference for his blog is for another set of twins in Greek mythology :)). If you use the search option on his blog, you may find some more information about her in a more personal context, I think.

Thanks! I've seen this blog, but haven't noticed anything about Leto there at a first glance... guess, I'll try to use the search function.

I honor Her mostly during the Noumenia but I had only very brief contacts with Her. I mostly got the impression of gracious and reserved presence - sorts of a 'kind, caring quietness'.

As one who is devoted to Apollon I have worshiped her over the years. Usually on the birthdays of Apollon and Artemis, on the Stepteria where in myth she champion the slaying of Python, and at the return of Apollon and the shortly following Theoxenia. I am also working on creating a modern festival of frogs that celebrates her as a protective caring mother that will be around the end of May. And of course I give her flowers on Mothers Day heh. Much of my worship of her is included with Artemis with whom she shares a very closely interconnected relationship that plays out in myths and Hellenic literature.
She does have some interesting associations, especially in Asia Minor. I am currently trying to finish up an article for the Demeter Devotional for Neos Alexandria on the relationship between Leto and Demeter.

Quite, gracious... I can see that. Also, still a certain kind of firmness and power, not obvious but hidden behind this kindness and graciousness.

The name, "the hidden/unobserved one", I think, suggests some key aspect of her nature, especially considering that both her children were associated with light...

Thanks for the reply, the association with Leto and Demeter would indeed be interesting to learn (they both are closely connected with motherhood, but represent very different aspects of it, as I see it).

One thing that bugs me is that whenever I 'saw' Her during journeying, She was always veiled, and always clad in dark red - not the bright kind, but the kind that makes you to think of fire burning very low under the coals. I would guess it's figurative of Her nature too - as both of Her children are light and purity altough in different ways, Leto is maybe the sort 'combustion' that brings forth both light and purity. My UPG would identify Her with a principle of 'emergence from the darkness' (as in 'the side of the spirit spectrum where darkness becomes light').

It's  worth to consider Her parentage too, as it seems significant to Her nature: She is daughter to Phoebe (bright, told to be a goddess of the brilliant intellect) and Koios (the inquirer, whose name translates as Query) and a sister to Asteria (goddess of nocturnal prophecies and falling stars).
