Hecate - Does anyone work with her?
« on: May 12, 2012, 07:42:37 pm »
So the other night, I had the strangest dream. It involved a few Goddesses, and they were all basically trying to put each other down. Blah Blah - Dream nonsense.
The only strange part was that when I woke up, I distinctly remember one of them being called Hecate. I am not all that familiar with her. Before that dream, I hadn't even bothered looking into her at all to be honest. I lean more towards Gaia typically, but the fact that I could remember her name, stuck with me.

I'm an earthy kind of person, I plant, and garden, and spend a lot of time outside. I don't understand why she would be calling to me, but I feel like that's what she was doing.

Does anyone work with her often? I know she sometimes gets a bad rap, but I'm trying to look past all that and figure out where I fit in. Does she have anything to do with plants and "green witch" type of things?
If we all lived a little greener, Then perhaps our children\'s children will live a little longer.

Well you figure she is associated to Medea and taught her the secret's of plants to use in poisons, cures and other such type applications.  Then she is also a chthonic goddess which means she is of the earth and one of her domains of influence is the earth.

NO I do not work with her but I am sworn to her and honor her and make offerings and libations to her.

She was given dominion over the earth, sky and sea. Plants need all three of those. She's also got the playbook on the liminal and since plants are in a constant state of change, I'd say they'd be in her wheelhouse.

It is said that she favors who she will especially those in battle ( I think I got that from the Theoi article), and if you go with the perspective that the earth is under attack from multiple sides, she might choose to favor a warrior for that cause.

I am a plant person. Nicked some Dame's Rocket and Philly Fleabane just today. I have comprehended her often in nature musings for various reasons. But you must know how the mind travels while doing things like gardening, so I won't write of all the places I've gone to in which she has arisen as relevant. But will let it suffice that after reading some of her it is very reasonable to me that a green witch would find many gems of thoughts concerning her.

Thanks for this!
I have been trying to concentrate on this more and more. Especially out in the garden.
perhaps a little more meditation will shed some light.

I have heard it said that sometimes a Goddess/God will chose a person, its just such a strange thought that it would happen to me.
I'm usually the one googling, and reading, and searching for someone. However, I've never been this involved before. In earlier stages I had let life get in the way of my spiritual path all to often.
Maybe now that I've started to take myself more seriously in the pagan community, and with my own practices, she has started to take notice in me. (Gosh that sounds arrogant :o) It is an awesome feeling though. Confusing, but awesome. haha.

She extremely protective from my (very limited) knowledge of her.  But yes, I think there are more than a few people that work with her here.  I have not worked with her personally but from what I hear from people that do is that she's a good one to call on for protection type stuff.

I don't think that's arrogant at all. I think it's kind of wonderful actually.:)

Hey, you are a nature person, so I thought you might get a kick out of this.

She's very point blank in the protection arena in my opinion.  Especially in the sense she will tell you what needs to be done.  Ignore it and I think she'll increase the pain and suffering you experience until you accept and do as she bids.   Though one has to understand that pain and suffering does not mean physical manifestation all the time.  It can also take the form of that nagging doubt for instance that keeps you awake with "What If" questions.

That's not to say that the pain and suffering you experience would not have been far worse had she not been there for you.  Sort of the idea that you get burnd and / or broken in the car wreck scenario though had she not stepped in you might just end up dead.  So yes she did protect you but not in the whtie light happy happy joyful joyful concept of not allowing anything to happen to you.

Bolded mine,

The danger in that position though is that Hekate / Hecate also knows that growth and change arise upon the ruins of destruction, decay and death.  As such she may bring it about through natural diaster or influence man made diasters and / or attitudes to cause the desired change.

Think of Medea, she got her desire with Jason then lost it all.  She murdered her own children after calling upon Hecate / Hekate for vengeance.  Though that part of the story is often omitted in the tale of the Argonautica when retold.  One can even look to the story of Circe and her costs as another example of death and destruction.

Though from my own perspective when those in battle call upon her it is because of reaching that point where civilized and accepted actions fortell diaster and death.  Yet they can not fully abandon thier fear and step into the wilderness aspect of the battle and act in a non civilized manner.  By calling upon her she helps them bridge the gap between the two extreme's as they stand in the liminal place in thier hearts and minds.

Think of it in the sense of the warrior who stands before the onslaught but the odds are so great they know they shall die.  Despair and distress cling to one side and an unfounded hope they shall survive clings to the other side.  Hecate / Hekate holds them in the liminal place to push them towards one while giving them strength against the other.  It's a trait that is also shared with Artemis and perhaps the one that was called upon for instance by the Athenian's at Marathon before the Persians.  Something that caused them to honor and feast in her name after winning against such great odds.

But I do agree she favors who she will as she desires.  Not only favors but will claim those she desires and leave them little to no choice in that matter.

Thanks everyone!

The new moon is right around the corner, I think I may go sit outside that night, gather together an offering and sit and meditate and maybe include a small ritual.  See what she has to say.

Any advice in the offering/ritual department would be awesome.
I have found a few things on my own, crossroads, lavender, garlic, mint.
But any additional information would be great. Especially from those of you have performed a ritual for her previously.

I have never performed a ritual where I was calling on a specific deity before so I must admit I am a bit nervous. :o

I tend to work in threes for her...say garlic, red wine, incense.
red grapes, milk with honey, incense (or an egg used previously to do an egg healing).
red things work good for in terms of being related to death in Greek history.
moon related things too.
also things with two sides, two colours in the sense that it shows the two sides of things,I beleive the idea being represents both life (birth) and death - those liminal areas of life. yew: the leaves have the two sides with two different colours.

for intense I tend towards jasmine because it's my fave and my go to moon related incense. sage, mugwort, wormwood also work well....I've also used "queen of the night" and magnolia.

For me I got into the habit of offering eggs and beans as part of the ceremony.  The egg is representative of the Lustural Egg that is associated to the dead.  The beans reflective of a Hekate / Hecate dinner.  The first few times I did an offering and honoring ceremony / ritual those two items would always come up as a last minute need.

Along with those items I also give honey and a small bit of milk.  On a few occasions I also offer a drop of blood as a means of commiting my life to her and my life force to her service.  On really rare occasions I have made strawmen representations to be sacrificed to her, usually in the form of a dog.

I tend to honor the local land spirits during those ceremonies as well so use Tobacco as an offering to them and discovered Hekate / Hecate also liked the smell of it as well.  Not a great amount but usually a ball about the size of a quarter and wrapped in something or scattered by hand over the flame to be consumed by the fire and transmuted into essence.

Not sure you can do it but I have one place I make my offerings and libations to her.  It is a place where the water rises to the surface of the land via a natual spring and flows into a small pond.  A place where a small section of earth pushes into the water but also has an overflow pipe that runs beneath it and forms a small water cascade.  Then it is situated in a small ravine or bowl which causes the winds to funnel down into it as they come down out of the mountain pass behind my house.

For my own purpose I also tend to perform my ceremony at a liminal point in the day.  Sometimes it's at dusk as it is neither night nor day or occasionally at dawn as again it is neitehr night nor day.  On some occasions I have been compelled to hold it so it crosses over midnight to show it is both yesterday and today, to show it is both the past, the present and the future all at once.

Again for my purposes only but depending upon which aspect I am calling upon I may make my libations upon the ground in a sunken place.  Make my fire for transmutation also in that same sunken place so that the energy and spirit of my offerings is carried into the depths of the earth and into the chthonic realms.

If I am making offerings to her celestial facet then I also do the libations and burnt offerings but upon a raised altar.  Sometimes with it over water or next to water so that the offerings and libations also filter down into her control and influnce over the seas and oceans.

On really important nights or when I am guided to make a large ceremony I may have altars to all three facets and make libations and offerings upon three separate fires.  I do have to add the disclaimer here that every time I have been compelled to do that indepth of a ceremony / ritual it has been delivered to me via dream time and usually developed over a few weeks time frame as I am guided in how each facet shall be done.

Again this is how she instructs me on what she desires or has revealed to me how a ritual / ceremony needed to be done.

Just an aside note but in that pond there is a black coy I saved a few years ago when the pond was  drained.  I came to call it Hekate / Hecate and every time I have one of my ceremonies / rituals at the end of the pond that Coy shows up.  There through the ritual / ceremony then drifts back off into the darkness when its done.  Now some might say its because of the fire, except the fire still burns before the ceremony and after it and that Coy pays no mind to it at those times.  In some ways that Coy has become a sacred vessel for the Spirit of Hekate / Hecate for to see it is to remind me of her at all times.

Thank you thank you! :)
I am quite excited, yet super nervous about my ritual this weekend.

I have never done one before.

I hope my backyard is suitable... :/ thats the only thought that keeps running through my head! haha. That and - if someone walks out and disturbs me, so help me I will rip 'em a new one.

I don't see that as a danger so much as analogous to the importance of compost when considering the realm of gardening. Less dramatic, but vital for growth.

I do ritual but not usually specifically for Hekate. Sometimes I'll talk to her then, but have had no answers. I do think about her daily though. When making purposive choices regarding the cycles of others or myself, I contemplate her roles. When doing any magic it feels like I'm being guided and I have begun to associate that feeling with her. When I am at the beach, in the woods or at the gardens I often feel like there is some kind of contact. When I guide another it feels like that's the kind of honoring I am supposed to be doing. Less so in ritual. Ritual takes me into myself, but doing takes me to her types of places physically and mentally. I am not sure if I am explaining that well. Sorry.

She has become more of a useful daily concept for me. It's less dramatic than a set apart ritual, but more embedded and significant. I do have a candle for her, but I light that for a bit almost daily these days.

Not super relevant but fun, I read a legend about her on website that I cannot recall except that it seemed very fluffy, but what do I know? I am made of fluff sometimes. Anyway, the legend is that she will appear to those who seek her on the Ebony Moons or Black Moons. That is when there are two new moons in a cycle like Blue Moons are two fulls in one (the second moon is the special one). So I got curious to find out when these happen. The next one I think is Jan. 30th, 2014.
