That was what I thought of. It's a very iconic highway (lots of pop culture references, etc) and not surprising if it developed a genus locus.

It occurred to me that this could also be something/one that could have originated around Detroit and the auto industry in that area.

It feels like his territory covers the northern and western borders of Illinois, down along Missouri and Kansas, then cuts down into Arkansas, excludes Florida but stops at...Kentucky? I can kinda see him weakly in Ohio, too...

I don't wanna make any sweeping statements about this before I know more but I think he may be Route 66 but also cover other territory? Maybe? :whis:

Perhaps he goes wherever the highways do?  I'd imagine that a being associated with roads and cars would be likely to travel away from his area of origin along whatever routes are available.

Hmmm. You know, I think you're right. He really seems to like cars, like the inner workings of the engines, the way they move over the roads (or, as he puts it, tear over the asphalt like somethin' possessed) and the way they've made life easier for people. He doesn't seem to much like crowds or traffic but he's all for the individual spirit.

To everyone: Thank you so much. I really appreciate all this help.

I did a quick Google search for Route 66 folklore and found this book, The Route 66 Encyclopedia by James Hinckley. It might be worth looking into. I'd suggest looking further into this subject. Good luck.

HarpingHawke, I agree - this is all really exciting.  Almost like the butterflies one gets in the pit of their stomach at the beginnings of a new relationship.

I'd be delighted to read anything that you find you can share about your new friend.

:o Oh my gosh. Well, anything new'll be on my pagan tumblr.

Also, I think I narrowed down his territory. His jurisdiction is definitely Route 66, but his territory extends to the areas I outlined earlier. And just...kinda everywhere. It's not necessarily that other beings don't exist over in other roads, it's just that...he drops in for coffee sometimes? :whis:

(also highway 280 seems kinda clean-cut exec but I'm not sure...that's probably another topic for another time, I guess).

At some point years ago, I stumbled on a bunch of stuff online about the folklore/popular-culture stuff/etc about Route 66. I doubt I still have links in my bookmarks, but I'll try to remember to see if I can re-find it.

Thank youuuuu. If you can't, that's fine. But if you happen to remember sources, I would really appreciate any you can think of.

That turned out to be easy - I figured I'd check the really old stash of bookmarks first, and that worked! I just have the one link, it turns out, but amazingly it's still live (that bookmark stash is from '06!), and IIRC there's quite a bit there: Historic Route 66.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.  He seems like an interesting guy.

I have connections to a few gearheads through family and friends.  If the opportunity comes up, I'll see if they have any thoughts on this.
