Goddesses/Spirits for women hurt by partners?
« on: December 10, 2014, 10:48:22 am »
I mean this in the more mundane, scorned or cheated on way. If there was anything more harmful going on, obviously the recourses would be quite different.

I was curious who anyone has worked with for this purpose. Sometimes I work with Freyja, though it is more because of my connection to her in general. Because I'm a pop culturist, I'm also thinking of bringing Anyanka in on this particular problem.

But usually I don't like working with entities I don't have a good familiarity with. And since this is a subject that is actually brought to me with fair regularity now, I thought I'd crowd-source ideas and go-tos.

Who do you work with? Who would you recommend? Who would you steer clear of?

Psyche (a Greek goddess) is pretty cool. By my experience, though, she talks more rather than reaches in and makes things happen, but that might have been more just in my case. I haven't worked with this next one from the same patheon, but maybe Anteros could be given an opportunity to expand beyond being the patron (ick) of The "Nice" Guys?

Anyanka...I get the impression that, even with the character development we've seen ("You turned him French! They call you Ms. Soft-Serve It!") that she's a powder keg waiting to burn the world down, but that's just my impression.

Hmm...I'm trying to think of more...I'm in with Faerylands, so the Wendy-Tinkerbell-TigerLily triangle kind of had aspects of that in the story but I didn't like how that was handled, it kind of skeeved me out. Danaerys Targaryen, maybe? More extreme stuff than cheating has happened, surely she's got a myriad of other dominions, but I think she'll be quite understanding about romantic scorning.

I wouldn't think Freyja would care too much. Maybe Frigga (whom I suspect is an adaption of Freya into a more maternal role), but I'm not certain if she's more for protection in childbirth or if she also presides over matters of infidelity.

Under no circumstances would I involve Anyanka...the women she avenged had a definite tendency to regret it as much as anyone else as the results bit them on the butt as well (like the one hiding from the demon spiders that killed the men that humiliated her and would've killed her as well had Willow not intervened, and then it had to be hunted and slayed, and another who was hunted by her ex after he was transformed into some demonic giant worm by Anyanka, and of course Cordelia who can't believe after wishing Sunnydale into "bizarroland" and Xander & Willow are not only still together but they both bond by killing her!). With that in mind I'd steer clear of that image/script.

Offhand, I'd choose Hera of the Greeks if I was gonna go that route. I'd think she'd be VERY sympathetic...

I get the feeling Psyche would be good especially for healing and gentleness and patience, which is a good resource to have.  I hadn't thought of Danaerys, but I think she'd be rocking for the right situation.  I feel like the Wendy-Tiger Lily-Tinkerbell idea is a great one, though to me I'd be a little worried about bringing the thunder down from all three of them (for me, even more than Anyanka).  :)  Best to save that for really necessary situations, but that's going in the bank.

I admit, I'm a little baffled that Anyanka would be a bad choice when Hera is more likely to strike for her own wounded ego and take out as much related collateral damage as possible?  Which isn't to say Hera isn't a swell idea, because she can be in the right circumstances, but I feel that way about Anyanka too.

It's always about circumstance, I suppose.  I prefer Freyja for the encouragement and support to find and accept love, as she always seems to want to move forward, but she's also a goddess of war.  And I think the particular vengeance I was seeking (which is on behalf of someone else) was actually too slight and narrow in scope for her interest.  Which is why I turned to Anyanka in particular at this time, because the circumstances were exactly within her purview, and when the details were discussed was intensely within her desire to do.

But it's good to have different perspectives, as not every situation is the same as this one.  So thank you very much for sharing.  :)

Danaerys had never crossed my mind either, but if you want a defender of traditional women's rights, I would say there's your winner! Although, thinking in those terms, Catelyn would be another choice for me personally, at least.

I personally feel Hera is extremely circumstantial. She can be the loving motherly figure, or the epitome of woman scorned. I find her to be ultimately wise and discerning. Not a bad choice, in my opinion.
