Etruscan Goddess Catha
« on: June 17, 2017, 02:06:34 pm »
So I was reading up on Etruscan gods and goddesses on wikipedia, and one name that stood out to me was "Catha". Wikipedia, and one other site said she was a sun goddess, but google seems to be pointing out that she's a moon goddess (or a male deity according to godchecker. Is godchecker a good resource? It seems kind of juvenile, and factless).

Was hoping someone on here could give me some new information. Sites, books, anything would help. Thanks!

I don't have much on her, but there's a brief mention of Catha in Nancy Thomson deGrummond's "Etruscan Myth, Sacred History, and Legend". We know she was important because she was named on the Piacenza Liver. deGrummond says that "inscriptions refer to her as 'Daughter', and some have suggested that she is the Daughter of the Sun in region 6 of Martianus" referring here to a map of the Etruscan heavens made by Martianus Capellus. deGrummond further speculates that being the daughter of the Sun would imply that her aspect is Lunar in nature. Catha (also sometimes spelled Cavtha) is also linked with a god named Suri as his consort, and the pairing implied to have some sort of underworld connections, but there's no depictions of either Suri or Catha in the art that had been found at the time that deGrummond's book was published (2006).

One thing I want to note about Etruscan deities in general is that they appear to be fairly gender-fluid. Etruscans didn't seem to be as hung up on the whole male-female thing when it came to depicting their gods, and although they might have a particular gender they were depicted as more frequently it wasn't a hard rule so you will see "gods" occasionally depicted as female and "goddesses" being depicted as male.
