Does she sound familiar to anyone?
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:31:35 pm »
In my practice I tend to work a lot with "genius loci" in the sense of the spirits of the local land and elements storms and such.
I commune with them, share stories, and sometimes strike deals or form friendships.

Over the last year or so I have had one spirit in particular playing a larger more prominent role in things for me. If I call she is first to answer..in fact sometimes she just hangs out. Her presence is such that my friends and such take notice of her from time to time even before I told them about her.

I don't normally leave offerings save on specail occassions. my gifts to the spirits are typically a night spent by the bonfire outside telling stories and myths and singing songs. The spirits are welcome to attend and be known during these sessions.

During my last night doing such, she showed up as usual and hung out through the whole ritual and for a while after. She hung out until I went to bed..and when I woke up she was still there.
For about a week she hung around constantly, not an oppressive or creepy type of thing just a vague feeling and if I concentrated or reached for it, she was right there. after a while I got used to the situation

The other day that changed, I woke up and she was gone.. I went through the whole day expecting her to pop up, and nothing happened. That night I was confused so I set about meditating and from there trancing a bit looking for her. Nothing I did made a difference, then suddenly I had one of those experiance where the vision or trance changes.. It's a subtle shift, I can't pin it exactly but it because one of the experiances I associate with the divine. She was there.  I got my first really good look at her. She was tall and slender with red and gold markings and paint on her. An owl perched on each shoulder and inhuman kind of golden brown eyes.  She kept shifting in my vision from having long delicate fingers to claws like a predatory bird.  She didn't speak to me really just stood there with this kind of scary half smile on her face.

I honestly can't recall all of the details but in the end I came back to my senses and I felt like I have a connection to her and I want to explore it more.

Top off my odd meter with I swear to goodness it feels like she is inside me now when I go trying to make contact instead of the usual experiance.

I'm not really sure what to make of these shenanigans, So any interpretations or opinions are welcome. I could very well just be crazy. This is definitely abnormal for me and out of my usual realm of experiance.

Anyone have anything similar happen?

I think owls are also associated with Athena.

How on earth do you think Frostfire was 1) describing the MorrĂgan specifically and 2) trying to bait people into saying it was Her?

The only goddess connected with owls that immediately springs to mind is Athena, but what may be more important for you is what this lady/Lady's symbols and appearance mean to you. If she is a genius loci, then she's gonna have her own associations that aren't exactly Google-able, but if she's a goddess proper and you're looking for Her identity, you may want to broaden your scope. What do owls (night time, hunting, predators) mean to you? What about the colors, anything else from the dreams? Have you asked Her directly about Her identity?

If she is a genius loci then she might not be familiar to anyone else here (unless they live local to you) and as Sage said, there might not be any information online or in books about her. Since you have specifically been working to build a relationship with the genius loci, I am inclined to believe that's who you have attracted, rather than a well-known goddess.

What are you expecting or what do you want from a relationship with the local spirits? Perhaps communicating that to her is the next step.

There's Lilith, too, of course, in Her various aspects, and Pueo, and some more minor/obscure owl spirits.  I think you're talking good sense, though.

Hm.  You're in NC?  That's Cherokee land.  Maybe read up on their lore and connect with locals if possible.

I think you may be right, I checked and for my area it was largely Catawba and Carolina Siouan.
I don't think I am going to have any luck connecting with locals but now I have an angle to research further. A quick google search showed me that Owls or Owl women were believed to be guardians of the lands beyond death, another mention was that they were the birds of medicine men and spirit workers, in some native american culturse the word for owl and, " witch ", is the word the site used although I doubt thats an accurate translation, were the same. So it's a start at least. Some owls were said to gaurd the bridges of the spirit and weigh them, sending some to wander as ghosts forever and sending others to the long road home. some of that sounds akin to her.

I have not asked her directly about her identity, I know it seems like it would be a first step but for some reason I'm hesitant to do that without pondering it a bit myself. ( that's why I like asking you ladies and gents, you always push me down thought channels I would never have wandered down otherwise )

To me owls are silent predators, watchers, wisdom through observation, illusion for some reason and the ability to see things as they really are. I do think of night time and starry nights too. No moon, maybe a bit of fog.

The colors.. The red makes me think blood, gut reaction is immediate on that one. The gold.. I'm not sure about the gold.

http://www.empower-yourself-with-color-psychology.com/color-gold.html

According to that, gold links to the sun and enlightenment among other things.

I had considered athena and she doesn't come across to me as being that...( reaching for a word here ) refined? She has what I would call a very animal edge, as in I don't think she thinks or feels in the same terms as I do sometimes. That just isn't in alignment with the bit I have read on athena.

I am not sure if she is genius loci, goddess, or someting else but as far as my goals I was looking for a teacher and a friend.

Not to shoot a good networking idea in the foot, but owls are considered symbols of death, misfortune, illness, etc. to Cherokee people. Like to the "avoid those things as much as possible" kind of point?

Athena.  Owls are associated with her.  Also maybe your totem animal is Owl.

Saw that on Wikipedia, but didn't chase it down.  But if owls can be bad omens, it might still help to seek out someone in the know and try to find out what's going on.
