Cranes
« on: October 05, 2013, 04:39:30 am »
A couple months ago, part of a dream I had involved several cranes (I can't remember the exact number. More than three, but less than ten) landing near me. It felt significant.

I'm thinking this was a ping from Manannan mac Lir, as I'd been doing some work with him in ADF rituals. A bit of reading on Irish crane symbolism confirmed that hunch.

What I'm wondering is if anyone else has experienced cranes in relationship to Manannan? I haven't had another ping since, so I'm wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely. I haven't sat down to do a larger google search on all the Gods that are associated with cranes. I do have a suspicion it's a God rather than a Goddess, but hey, I could be wrong about that, too.

You probably know this already, but maybe you haven't considered those possible connections yet...

Does it have to be connected to a deity? Maybe the crane has some characteristics or symbolism which is important for you at the moment?

The crane is very important in asian cultures, maybe something about it strikes you as significant?

I think I've read somewhere that it had some significance in Germanic cultures as well, but I'm not sure what exactly...?

Were you able to determine the exact species? Were they white or grey?

In large parts of Asia, cranes symbolize happiness/good fortune and longevity. Not really what you are looking for, I know.

I know that a number of birds were important to the Celts in a religious context, but I'm not certain about the crane though. The Ainu and the Koreans are known to participate in rituals called crane dances. In ancient Arabia the Goddesses Allat, Uzzah, and Manah were some times referred to as the exalting cranes. The crane was also associated with Apollo by the Greeks.

Hmm, the Gaulish figure Tarvos Trigaranus is depicted as a bull with three cranes resting on him, but there's not really a lot of solid information on what that might mean, other than maybe being associated with Esus since they appear next to each other on the pillar of the boatmen.

Manannan is associated with cranes, through his turning the skin of Aoife, when she was transformed into a crane, into his crane bag of treasures. (I've been on the lookout for a crane statue or ornament to use on my shrine to him, but nothing I've seen has been right, yet.)

That has always been my experience. It seems as though every time I reach a real block spiritually, or am feeling lost and frustrated in a big way, I see a crane. Without fail. Every time I then turn to Manannan and there is change, something big happens or something small but very effective that bumps me to where I need to be.
Really?  So, hey, want to go fishing?  I\'ve got a telescope, and it\'s going to be a dark night, so we should see the fish really well.
...what, I\'m not talking about fishing?  That\'s stargazing?  It\'s all doing-stuff, so it\'s the same thing, right?

I always associate cranes with Japan.  Perhaps you are being drawn to some type of Shinto god or goddess?
