Are you connected to your God/Goddess at birth?

I recently discovered that Inanna is who my Goddess is, but looking back on my life, she has always been present or trying to grab my attention with certain symbols and I never paid them any attention. I honestly knew they were from someone, but I just didn't know who as I believed in One Central God.

I always have had crows,hawks,butterflies,black cats, appear to me and I never knew some of these were symbols for her. I had found an affinity towards the Goddess Auset in high school, but it probably was because of the things I was going through at the time, self love, that she helped me realize that. I read that Inanna and Auset are similar, that Inanna is the mother of a lot of different Goddesses,including Auset.
My life has very much been like Inanna. I used to have unstable relationships and it caused me to become angry and slightly bitter, but I never stopped trying to find a nice guy.  I did descend into the underworld, because I was dealing with abuse. I did change, but for better. I got sick of the b.s and I will fight, if need be and all hell will break lose. I often am credited with being a very strong person, emotionally, even though I'm emotional, because I have dealt with many things on my own, but with help of loved ones. (Moon trine Pluto in Scorpio, in astrology, Aries Moon, and I am an 8th House, Pluto/Scorpio type )

Are Goddesses and Gods with us from birth until death?

I don't remember a whole lot before the age of four, so I certainly don't know.

It is certainly the case that relationships with the Powers can begin, end, and increase or decrease in importance, just like any other relationships.

How and why do they choose certain people?

 
When they do, it is for their reasons, and you'd have to ask them.  They are likely to vary just as much as anyone else's reason for forming a relationship.

I know now that Epona has been with me as far back as I can remember  (around 3 or so). My other  Gods  didn't come until my 40s (Macha and Manannan ). Morrigna arrived just before my raising To HPS last Samhain.
