Strange dream last night -- who is reaching out to me?
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:19:39 pm »
Hi all! I had an odd dream last night, and I'm not sure if it's a message or just a dream.

I won't get into the details (my dreams are often long and very detailed), but I woke feeling like a goddess was trying to reach out to me. There were two separate dreams and while neither were explicate in nature, they were both relating to sex and love. I didn't get a name of a female, but the name "Osiris" kept repeating over and over. So I feel that whoever she is, she's related to Osiris in some way and she rules over sex and love.

Like I said, not sure if this is a message or a dream. I just joined a new pagan forum yesterday and read a post about "god phone" (?), where the person was asking how people communicate with their God/desses. So it could just be my brain interpreting what I read and giving me a dream as such.. Or it could be a goddess actually reaching out! Not sure.

Either way. I don't know much about the Egyptian pantheon. I know some names, and I did some googling, but there are so many conflicting articles and stories and myths. I just don't know which are reliable and which are just stories.

Any ideas?

Aset/Isis springs immediately to mind, particularly as she was married to Osiris.

Hathor leaps out at me because fertility is one of her remits, and I believe she was also prayed to for matters of the heart. Although, her connection to Osiris is a lot more tenuous. I read this on Wikipedia 'The cult of Osiris promised eternal life to those deemed morally worthy. Originally the justified dead, male or female, became an Osiris but by early Roman times females became identified with Hathor and men with Osiris.'

The source of this info is given as Oxford Guide to Egyptian Mythology, and tbh I'm not sure how reliable that book as I've never read it.

If you're interested in knowing more about the pantheon try here: http://www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk/index.html. The list is of deities is by no means exhaustive but the information for each one is pretty in depth.

Yeah, Ancient Egyptian mythology is confusing like that. Here's a snippet from a book that might help explain things:

'..these various creation accounts, display remarkable cohesion, exhibiting the same themes and following similar structures. The regional cult centres, put their own spin on generally agreed essentials & substituted their own local gods for those mentioned in other versions. In this way, Egypt's various priesthoods put forward alternative, rather than competing, views. Thereby reducing the risk of inter-faith arguing.'

That's from The Egyptian Myths by Gary Shaw, I throughly recommend it as an introduction to Ancient Egyptian mythology. :)

Hope I was some help!

The Egyptians didn't really codify their mythology the way that the Greeks did; the thing we have as a most coherent narrative was actually written by Greeks based on Egyptian sources.  What we've got is a bit more linear than "Darmok and Jalad at Tinagra" (if you get that Star Trek: TNG reference) but it's far from the Oresteia for straight-up narrative.

That doesn't mean that when you find conflicting stories they're references to actual ancient sources, but it does mean that it's complicated.

The Greeks equated Hetharu (Hathor) with Aphrodite; love, sex, and beauty do fall into her standard domains.  Aset's (Isis) relationship to those things is far more complicated and I might say (though I don't work with her except in a very particular form) rather more dynastic than not, but she is the obvious connection to Wesir (Osiris).

(As to how closely linked Hetharu and Wesir are, it is worth noting that Hetharu has funerary roles as Mistress of the West, and while she's not an underworld deity per se, she does assist with conducting the dead on their way.  The comment about women being identified with her rather than Wesir late in Egyptian history is accurate.)
