Good offering for Epona
« on: October 11, 2012, 10:24:07 pm »
So for a while a wanted to connect to a god or goddess. I've been reading up on Epona and read she is a goddess of healing and, honestly, I could really use the healing right now. I was thinking of leaving seeds for birds in the woods behind my dorm.

Thoughts?

Why would seeds for birds be an offering for Epona?  (I could possibly see it for Rhiannon, who is also strongly connected with horses, but who, in her lore, has three birds.)

I'm also kind of skeptical of your source's claim that she's a goddess of healing.  Not to say she wouldn't help a follower to heal (though IME that's true of many deities who aren't specifically deities of healing), but I'm not aware of anything indicating that was what she was a goddess of, and a quick check at Epona.net/ (excellent site on what's known about her cultus historically) doesn't show anything of the sort.

One offering for Epona that's both historically-attested, and that I and others who've worked with her have found to be a good one, is roses.

Thanks so much for the website. I've only looked at a few, if I could find the links again I will post them. I'm really very new to anything dealing with Gods and/or Goddesses so any help would great.

Are you looking for info on Epona, or are you looking for a god/dess associated with healing?  If the latter, are you looking specifically for a Celtic god/dess, or someone from any pantheon?

I am looking for a god/dess of healing, specifically Gaulish/Celtic pantheon.

Sorry I am very new to all this, thanks for the help.

My advice would be to do your homework and learn about the Celtic deities and their mythologies before approaching any of them.  There are tons of resources available.  Check out the resource list thread in the Hazel & Oak Celtic Polytheism SIG here on TC.

Another good place to start and to find basic info is the Mary Jones website:  http://www.maryjones.us/

You'll find there are many Celtic deities associated with healing.  One of the best known is Brighid.  We have a SIG here focused on Brighid: the Cauldron Cill SIG.  You might want to check out the resource list there, as well.
