If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Is this my Patron calling?
« on: September 21, 2014, 03:26:35 pm »
The last few week, I have been thinking about a patron Diety alot.  Up until now I have only been refering to them as Goddess/God.  However when I think about finding a patron, the Morrigan's name comes across my mind.  Could She be calling me?  If so, is there any good inromation about Her out there, i.e. how She likes to be worshiped, what offerings she likes, things associated with Her ect....

It might be.

Do keep in mind that the historical Morrigan was a bloodthirsty goddess of wanton sex and rampant slaughter, so... I don't know you at all, but from the few posts I've seen, I wouldn't say you match up too well.

She mostly appeals to military types and other combative sorts.

As for information, google with caution, stick to reputable sites, there's a lot of romanticised nonsense about her out there.

There are many words I have for m'Lady, but they don't include "wanton" or "bloodthirsty."

When are you going to open your matchmaking service for mortals and deities?

From what I've seen of Wiccan Mama's posts, I cannot make an assumption as to whether they'd be a good match with m'Lady. Because, you know, people are complicated and so are gods.

That totally explains why She thwapped me, the anti-war pacifist hippie love flower child.

While this view of the Morrígan is, IME, not uncommon as an impression people have of her historic nature and role, it's inaccurate. The Wikipedia article on her is a fairly good overview of the actual mythology and of the scholarly understanding of her.

What would your source be for this? It is certainly not true of my experience of tM devotees.

Since you show concern about reliability of sources, and I've linked to Wikipedia, which many people believe to be 'unreliable', I'll also include this link to an extensive and detailed explanation, written by a professional librarian, on the ways Wikipedia is, and the ways it's not, reliable, and how to use it in ways that maximize its reliability.

(I see you've already apologized to Morag for the post I'm responding to, Cuthwin, but I'll post this as it stands since it covers things from a very different angle.)

It's definitely possible.

In my experience the offerings She prefers above all else are actions, but you also can't go wrong with some whiskey. ;) As far as food offerings go I've also found Her to be partial to chicken bones and yerba mate tea (brewed strong enough to kill a large mammal).

A good starting point for research is, yes, Wikipedia. It shouldn't be your last stop, but it's a good first stop, and often they have resources for further reading linked on the page. The Morrigan's page is here. (And I see while I wrote this post SunflowerP posted a link to a very good post about Wikipedia as as source, which should definitely be read.)

I'm sure someone else on TC will have better recommendations for reading than I do; my knowledge of Her lore has been picked up from disparate sources that I can't really remember at this point.

Some people experience The Morrigan as one distinct entity, and others experience Her as a triple goddess. For myself, She is one distinct entity. Your mileage may vary.

Above all else, The Morrigan is a goddess of sovereignty. That is connected to things such as battle and sex, but sovereignty is at the core of it. Some of the work She has me do is connected to regaining my self-sovereignty in a world that is hell bent on taking it away. She also has me do activist work, which is connected to sovereignty as well -- environmental activism and the sovereignty of the land; feminism and the sovereignty of the marginalized. I can't give people their sovereignty, but I can help create a world where it's easier to take it back. I can fight against those who would keep the status quo going strong.

If She is knocking on your door She may have you do very different things.

When I discovered She was thwapping me, it started with weeks of being drawn to Her in my reading or having Her popping up in the middle of research. It started to become clear there was a pattern at work, but I dismissed it as "delusions of grandeur." I felt quite a bit of awe while reading about Her and thought "She could never be interested in me!"

Well, She put those thoughts to rest when She suddenly appeared while I was in trance and said "Hey. You. You're mine. Stop running from it. Sheesh." (Paraphrased.)

Anyway, I recommend doing more reading about Her and seeing if things click for you. You can also try giving a small offering and seeing if you get a reaction. If you're comfortable with meditation that's also a good way to see if She's calling.

Above all, take it slow, set your boundaries, and keep open to the possibility that it could be someone else. Sometimes if we get hooked on one idea it prevents us from seeing what's really going on. :)

Upon reflection, I realize I owe you, the OP, an apology, also.

My post was hasty, poorly phrased, ill thought out, igorant, and rude. Its was not my intent and is not my place to attempt to police your connection with the divine, and I hardly know you well enough to judge your personality anyway.

Besides which, if you're godbothered, i'd say the Morrigan's opinion holds just a teensy bit more weight than mine. ;)

So, again, I apologize.

Apology accepted, and thank you for making it. For what it's worth I totally understand getting caught up in misinfo about gods and goddesses (or anything pagan-related, really) and thinking it's right because, well, no one's ever corrected you, and the misinformation keeps getting perpetuated as correct. That was me about EVERYTHING before I came to TC.

And, well, tM does tend to get represented as a bloodthirsty sexpot. So it's an easy mistake to make.

We're cool. :)

No appology needed.  I wanted opinions and I got them.  Your's counts too.  And I think that we may see other Dieties that we do ot  work with different just like with people.

I will try an offering and see what happens.  As for meditation, I have not had the time to really try it. I either fall asleep, or one of my kids wakes up.

There are several threads that have information about the Morrighan. She/They are not easy to serve, but well worth it all the same. Be prepared to face big changes in your life, but it will be worth it in the end. I know from personal experience.
