Deity reading
« on: April 28, 2020, 01:20:40 pm »
Hello everyone!
The other day I did a reading for myself because I felt like a deity has reaching out to me (for a while honestly) and that I was just being blind to it. So I did the reading and the structure of the reading is:
Card 1: The Deity
Card 2: A trait ( usually negative )
Card 3: A trait ( usually positive )
Card 4: What they rule over
Card 5: Something associated with them.

What I pulled were as follows: The Moon, Ace of Cups (Inverted), Knight of Pentacles (Inverted), Five of Wands and the Eight of Wands.
I sat down and did some research and looked up deities that are associated with the Tarot card the Moon, and the ones that popped up were Selene, Artemis, and Hecate. However as soon as I pulled The Moon I immediately thought "Oh shit, it's Nyx."

I decided to meditate last night on the reading because when I was younger I had read The House Of Night books and I don't want to assume that Nyx actually is calling me when I had idolized the version of her in the books. I fell asleep shortly afterward and in my dream I remember seeing purple lilies and purple hyacinth. As well as myself sprawling on a piece of paper "The Magician". I slept really poorly last night so that was all I remembered when I woke up. I did look up the Magician card when I woke up this morning and it points to Hermes, but I am unable to link the flowers to anyone, especially any four of the goddesses that are linked to that card. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe me writing "the Magician" was Hermes delivering a message? But then again I am really uncertain and I think this whole dream has made it even more confusing to me.

My instinct would be to try and not put a name to it straight away (though I understand the temptation). Instead, I would get some purple lillies and purple hyacinth - or, get images of them, for an altar. and then meditate on that colour, those images, the emotions associated with the dream.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the deity associations of tarot cards. For one thing, it only covers a couple of written-down pantheons. There may be other, rarer pantheons who aren't written down; and it might be a local, personal, or otherwise unrecorded spirit.

I'd also say that, if you're using the cards as tools and "it's Nyx" jumps into your head, that might be a good instinct to run with. Try revering her for a little while and see if it fits.

Moon = Selene, Artemis, Hecate - these are just moon goddesses, goddesses associated with the literal moon. but the Moon tarot card can mean all sorts of stuff, such as dreams, delusions, false visions, imagination, strangeness, creativity.

So yes, I think Nyx is actually quite a good fit for what that card indicates, because it's a bit more...Stellar in my terminology...it's cthonic, and abstract, and associated with primal, unknown powers. Also, look at Nyx's children - Sleep, and the Oneiroi whom I think relate to dreaming. My five minutes of research indicate she was symbolised by the moon. I'd associate the Ace of Cups reversed with perhaps a mercilessness, or, a sense that she is not a cuddly spirit. And the Five of Wands with a lot of the ways she brings strife/difficulty/disruption into mortal lives. Lily and hyacinth are both pretty cthonic flowers, both coming from bulbs underground.

Another option would be literally Hyacinth, Apollo's lover who was deified. I note with interest that purple jewels are a related colour. If that was the case, then my interpretation of the Moon would be that Apollo is the Sun, and thus his beloved would be his compliment. The eight of wands would be the discus that killed him. Similarly, ace of cups being related to love - lost love, in that reversal; and the conflict of 5 Wands being the conflict of the winds who competed for his affection. And purple is a nice gay colour. Oooh, I might set up an altar to Hyacinth myself.

Hermes = Magician is one of these base-correspondences, where the figure of Hermes in alchemy influenced the magician concept in the tarot. Eight of Wands is a very Hermes card. Still, the flowers don't seem right for him. Magician could refer to being proactive, or even, doing magic, rather than literal Hermes.

I've never found this kind of divination for spirits very helpful - I find it too difficult to interpret the result.

I've lost my spellbook atm, but am trying to find you the one I use which is basically for receiving instructions. So the card positions indicate things like "state of our relationship" and "what is my task". I like this better because it fits how the tarot works better. So, I can interpret the "what is my task" card in multiple ways, such as, skills to develop or situations to focus on. As soon as I find the book, I'll come back and share it with you.

I hope that some or any of that is helpful to your thinking!

Yes this is extremely helpful. I have asked in multiple formats about this because it’s always better (in my opinion) to have an extra set of eyes to look into things to pick up things I might not have.

We had a discussion a little while back about Tarot readings and deities you might find helpful in terms of 'how to interpret some of this'.

I'm inclined to agree with Eastling's comments there that Tarot readings about "which deity is this" tend to present the problem you're having - how do you interpret what you get? There are often a lot of possible interpretations, and it may depend a lot on the deck you're using, and your relationship to the iconography and design of that deck, all of which are also things other people can't really help you with easily. Tarot may be a lot more helpful in "What thing should I focus on here?" or "What offerings might be welcome" or some related questions.

Logically speaking, you have a name you're drawn to (and have been in the past) and you have some flowers. There may be more than one deity involved here, and so it may make more sense to set aside the "Is a deity trying to nudge me" until/unless you get some more specific data, and work with what you do have (an inclination to a particular deity on one hand, and some specific flowers.)

What I'd do (and what I did in a similar case, actually) was work with the data I was getting, and build a relationship from there. (Downside to this approach: it's been 18 years, and I still don't have a name for M'Lady that matches up with anything I can find in the historical record. Fortunately, other than being a bit awkward to talk about with other people, this isn't actually a problem for my practice.)

When I'm working with people looking at "Wait, what's going on here, maybe I'm interested in this deity but I'm not sure", I aim them at some of the exercises and activities in the links in the deities and other beings section on my website, especially the last one. Pick two or three things to try that seem interesting to you, and give them a fair try.

(Bonus option, pick two that feel easier to you, and one that feels more challenging in a productive way. Like if you're normally not good at art, try doing some art, as well as modes you're more comfortable in. Sometimes that clarifies things a lot faster.)

Even if that doesn't get you answers, per se, the process will often shake other things lose and help you figure out what to poke at next.
