Hades by Supergiant Games
« on: January 23, 2019, 02:52:08 pm »
My favorite developers, Supergiant Games (known for Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre), are working on a lovely game based on Greek mythology. It's called Hades, and it focuses on the attempts of Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld, to escape his home and reach Olympus. It's a roguelike, meaning that gameplay is mostly focused on fighting your way through a procedurally-generated set of chambers again and again, returning home to the House of Hades when you die and gaining power boosts each time.

It's in early access at the moment, and so far I'm finding it very enjoyable, albeit hard as hell (no pun intended). The developers have obviously done their research on the mythology but also given it their own spin--for example, while Hades appears to be the main antagonist, he's presented as a grumpy workaholic bad dad with family issues rather than some kind of cartoon villain, and it's clear that the Olympian gods, while sympathetic to you, have their own agendas.

You can learn more about the game here if you're interested (or buy it if you so choose). If anyone else decides to give it a shot, I'd love to hear what you think.

I think that's typical of Roguelikes. The only one I ever got very far in was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

Yeah, I really wish they'd instate some kind of easy mode--I really only played the older roguelikes when they had one.
