Devil May Cry and Shin Megami Tensei
« on: July 10, 2013, 11:55:43 am »
Since I can't choose between them because I love them both. :whis:

Has anyone else played either series? I've played DMC 1-4 and own DMC 1-3. I've also played the Demo for DmC and let me just say that while I did enjoy the combat of DmC, it just felt like it was missing something and I just didn't feel like I was making much progress trying to defeat enemies, kind of like DMC2...

As for SMT, I have a friend from the US who introduced me to the series and so far, I've got two games from over two Christmas's: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne  (Christmas 2011) and Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon (Christmas 2012). I also have Strange Journey and Devil Survivor 2.

I had also almost completed Devil Survivor 1 but didn't because I listened to Yuzu (and wanted to get a certain someone). No soothing of Loki could stop me from feeling just as disappointed in myself as he was in me and thus, I decided to restart the game and quit because of a certain someone whose only weakness is a certain object and his dumb minions keep killing everyone off. I hate Beldr.

... yeah. Sorry for my rant there. So, uh, has anyone played either them? Did you experience any misfortunes with either of them? (I know I have! In all of them.) Tell me your horror stories or not so horror stories.

I adore both these series, but, shamefully, I actually had to use a cheat code in order to beat Phantom in DMC 1 (i forget what it did) and then after that, the game was a cakewalk.

I played DMC 3 (special edition) straight, with no cheat codes though, and I beat it. I didn't really find it that hard. Some of the bosses were a pain in the ass, though.

As for SMT, including spinoffs, I have played:

DemiKids: Dark Version
Nocturne (at the final boss, haven't beaten it yet)
Devil Survivor (beaten it about six times now)
Devil Survivor 2 (about midway through the game right now)
Strange Journey (at the final boss)
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon
Persona (the PSP remake, not sure where I am in it)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (got stuck on a particular boss)
Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP, not sure how far I got)
Persona 3 (the original, FES, and Persona 3 PSP)
Persona 4 (the original on PS2)

I also have Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers for 3DS, but I haven't touched it yet, and I have SMT IV on preorder.

I think it's safe to say that I love this series.

For Beldr, I'd recommend putting points into your MC's strength and just wailing on him. He's tough, but he's also ridiculously easy on New Game +. I know, he's very annoying, but trust me, none of the bosses are half as annoying as the ones in Devil Survivor 2.

There's a cheat code? Welp, if I knew that, my Hard Mode experience would've been a breeze. Oh well.

I currently have Dante Must Die unlocked on DMC1 and, uh, if you thought the game was painful already, then DMD makes it ten times worst. I think DMC1 just made me masochistic enough to try to beat the game on the final, hardest difficulty.

But then I think about Mundus and reconsider my life choices.

I used cheat codes... just to unlock everything. I think I was halfway through Hard mode when I decided "Nah, I don't want to play the game over and over again just to get everything..." and I heard DMD mode was tedious and didn't feel like bothering with it.

Oh no, I know that. I think my problem is everyone else is a different level of squishiness. Yuzu is just squishy, Keisuke is the middle ground of squishiness and Atsuro is the squishiness that lasts a little longer.

And then MC is the non-squishy one who tries to eliminate Beldr's Cait Sith and everyone deals with the others on the side but eventually the minions either kill everyone off or get at the MC and if enough demons surround him, he's sure to die.

... but yet I would take this fight over the ones in DeSu2. I'm at the final boss of DeSu2 and let's just say it's tiring and draining.

For Nocturne, I'm... at the final boss for the True Demon Ending. I want to try other endings but uh... after doing all that work it's kind of hard to do something else because it'll feel like something is missing.

Oh and Dante. Dante tempts me too much. Despite what people say about him, I actually find him useful. :| Maybe because him and Shura were my only real damage dealers the first time I tried for the TDE.

I'm... I can foresee SMT becoming one of those game series that I will invest a lot of money into (when I have money to buy games... and there'll probably be a lot of shipping on my end, too.)
