If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Looking for a Good Soda Bread Recipe for Imbolc
« on: January 26, 2012, 03:09:58 pm »
It's been a long, long, long time since I made soda bread, but I want to try it for our Imbolc dinner.

Does anyone have a good recipe to share?

Also, I've always heard it referred to as "Irish" soda bread.  Does anyone know if it originated in Ireland or any other reason it would be called that?  I'm just curious.  ;)

I'd also be interested in any other recipes people associate specifically with Imbolc.

Thanks!

Oh, I have many. Though they're all from the same blog. :ange:  It's great to have options, right? :)

Traditional Irish Soda Bread -- her own recipe, super simple and plain
Irish Soda Bread with Raisins -- slightly different base dough, with added caraway seeds, raisins, and a bit of brown sugar
Mini Irish Soda Breads -- her own recipe, different sizes and baking times, and raisins added
Oats and Honey Irish Soda Bread -- honey, oats, and raisins added
Skillet Scones (Soda Bread Farls) -- her own recipe that's cooked in a skillet like a huge pancake

Of these, I've done the Skillet Scones (a lot; they make a great quick breakfast) and the Traditional Irish Soda Bread (large loaf and mini sizes) because I tend to prefer plain soda bread slathered with honey and butter or jam, but I think I'm going to try the Oats and Honey one next for this Imbolc. I've used white whole wheat flour in each recipe, using about half AP and half whole wheat.

I'm not a huge raisins-in-baked-goods fan, so I leave them out of every recipe, but of course, your mileage will vary. ;)

I have an uber-healthy version that substitutes apple sauce for oil and uses whole-wheat flour.  I will see if I can find it tomorrow.

Well, I know there's Ms. Graveyard Dirt's theoretically gluten-free oatmeal soda bread that you might be interested in: http://www.graveyarddirt.com/newsprint/archive/000428.php (NSFW?)
