Welcome to the FlameKeeping Discussion of the Week thread for 14Feb12 through 20Feb12!

Topic: Gods

Background reading: Inspired by Gods; When Gods come knocking

Questions:

What does being called to a task mean to you?

If you could be called by any god, who would that be and why? What do gods mean to you?

Would you rather be called to a task or choose your own? Why?

Questions:

It means I have something to do, that my talents or interests can be of use in a particular area. Or it means I have something to learn, and growing to do.

Well, if I could pick one, I would have done so awhile ago. Probably one of the 'darker' deities, like Hekate, Persephone, or Ausir. Or one of the deities that rule over crafts and talents, like Lugh or Minerva.

I think the gods can act like college professors. They come to you and give you an assignment, then they back off and expect you to do it without them holding your hand every step of the way.

I've recently gotten the idea that Aphrodite has things to teach me. She's one of the last I would have chosen.

I'd rather be called, because it means someone outside myself is seeing either potential or deficit in me. It's not just me picking whatever I like. I'm more likely to grow if it's a task given to me.

When the gods call me to a task, I take it seriously. I treat it like a job. Something that is my responsibility to do. Not something that I can choose to do, but something I must do. Even if I don't really want to. For me, it means that the gods feel I either need to do this, or that no one else can do it quite like I can (or that multiple folks need to do it in order for whatever 'it' is to work).

I'd be called by the gods that I'm already called by, honestly. I like the gods I have. If I could, I would get a bit more personal with the kami, but I think that will come with time. I'm not sure what gods mean to me. They are there, and they are awesome. But they can be a pain in the butt some days. However, I feel like something would be missing in my life if they were suddenly gone.

I'm open to either, really. Many times, I feel like my goals and the goals of my gods (for me) overlap. So I haven't really had to pick much either way. I many times feel like the gods know what is good for me, so I consider their wishes of me quite a bit before declining something. Many times, even if I don't want what they say I should be doing, it ends up coming around again and again before I end up doing it anyways. And some times the things I think I've chosen for myself, well... ends up being what they wanted anyways.

Sooo... idk? ha ha.

First, each time I read your blog it resonates in such a good way. I feel lucky to have it there, but realize there is a person doing it and must give my thanks. So Thank you. Particularly what resonated with me this time was the first paragraph of "When the Gods Come Knocking." I have difficulty with direct talk of such things perhaps for similar reasons.

I am a thick headed one admittedly and I am not certain I am being called to do tasks, but I do things. I leave offerings and go places and talk to people often with a god in mind. Always with the world in mind. If that is a calling, I cannot say.

I do not know who is doing the calling anymore than I know if I have been called or if I simply reflect. I have been a type of warrior and carried a paperback of Antigone with me through my twenties. I saw her as Athena, a goddess I admired greatly, in human form. But that faded away as I took on the task of healing from childhood traumas. After a good amount of that work, there was no need for a warrior anymore, not daily the way there used to be and I began to see both A's fondly but at a distance. I recognize them in others and smile at their grit.

In the last year I have been reading more about Hekate. I'm fond of how her mythology acts as a kind of refusal to pigeon holing by default. Like she's always working toward something, and has no time for considering where she'd like to rank. As if her goals are more precise and will not be limited by anything save her own will.  Or at least that is the way it has struck me. I am currently reading the Sarah Iles Johnston book and my interest has compounded. It's possibly that I am affirmed in my ideas about her because others whom I have respected separately have given great value to her liminality. Ego it might be, so I wait and read and wonder if she is knocking or has been.

I have not read other books on her that I have seen recommended in places but have watched rituals via the youtubes and felt a distancing. Idk. I have thought that if such a deity were to call me, that she would feign call me to ritual but instead to act on behalf of my fellows as best I am able in the everyday. Something I am drawn to do anyway but a path that can be fortified by the understanding that this is what my kind do. Enriched and even empowered by what she symbolizes to me.

Still, I've been toying with the idea of tattoos, and I quite like that wheel that apparently has little/no grounding in Hekate's history. And I don't seem to care much about that oddly. The egoist that remains does disdain the idea of being regarded as a fluffy bunny or in any way less serious than something with footnotes; however, that's not in play with this current tattoo fascination. I've got an idea that I don't even want to shake and I want those wheels, modified precisely as per my vision, on the backs of my shoulders facing directions that my front eyes cannot. It is strange for me as I have never wanted a tattoo before, much less two. And for them, I want/see ritual in the getting. Which combined has struck me as a serious wtf idea in its contradiction to feeling distanced by ritual. Still, cannot shake it, don't want to, and am set to inquire at shops to see who will allow ritual and a specific timing for getting the job done. I have time to wait though. If it is a calling to a task, then it is a calling set for more than a year from now for completion.

So I will wait and read and do and see if this goddess is actually calling me or if I am simply enamored with and empowered by an idea. Hyper-protection can be a lasting symptom of childhood trauma, and a soteriological pull could be behind these thoughts. Still, no others of that ilk are in mind. I may need to read of them to test myself.

Gah, I hope I answered the questions even if in a roundabout way. Apologies for length and possibly tmi.

The whole point of the project is to get this stuff into words and figure out what we're doing.  So length is absolutely fine.

And I'm glad you're finding my blog useful - it means a LOT to me to know that it's helping people!

It is helping me quite a bit. This week has brought some pretty difficult things for my students. There was a shooting, and while it was over an hour away, kids get frightened and need the distraction of work. Then to compound tragedies there was a fatal car crash involving one of their dear friends last night. It's not difficult to be there emotionally for them. But at night, I also need a distraction that works my heart and mind and connects me to a bigger picture. It helps me to be grounded so that I can tend to them.

There is always an opportunity to wallow, it is very good to find one that permits something more productive.

You must be a neighbor.  That wasn't far from me, either.

What a nightmare. :(

Being called to a task means being offered a chance to improve and grow.  As each task is attempted, I change in new ways and gain the chance to examine myself and my place within the Divine.

I overflow with love for the gods that called me and cannot imagine (now) being called by anyone different.  Prior to those callings, however, I expected to one day bend knee to the Greek pantheon as a whole without one deity in particular.

Quote
Would you rather be called to a task or choose your own? Why?

I'd rather be called, as each calling opens up new doorways for me.  To rely on choosing my own tasks could result in a spiritual rut.
