? Philosophy university study ?
« on: June 29, 2017, 10:01:34 am »
I am looking for some information or experiences of person(s) whose major was or is Philosophy undergraduate at a US university? Are there unis which are more suited to a international atheist student?
Any suggestions for a good philosophy study uni in the midwest or nearby to that area in the USA?

It's not my particular field, and so I only have tangental knowledge of it, but my Ethics professor was a recent grad from the Philosophy PhD department at St. Louis University. It's a Jesuit university, so there will be a Catholic undertone to everything, but judging from the class I took with my professor they're pretty tolerant of non-Catholics (which doesn't surprise me, my husband also went to a Jesuit school and always spoke highly of it, despite being a very skeptical agnostic). We only had one day in class where we talked about Catholic ethical guidelines, and that was very explicitly stated by my professor to be meeting the requirement established by the Catholic health system that my school is a part of. Discussion and disagreement in the form of well-stated arguments were accepted and encouraged. :)

I second this. Jesuits and their universities, blooming heretical mold that they are, would be particularly suited to teaching philosophy to any student -- regardless of their religious affiliation or lack thereof.

Hmm.. I didn't major in the field, but minor is a similar type of field (Religious Studies). There are plenty of atheists in my classes. Honestly I don't see how you would have trouble at most US universities in any field. Religion has never come up in any of classes other than religious studies and no one has ever asked what my personal beliefs are. The town I love in is a typical college town, but the state is very rural and not particularly liberal so if we don't have a problem with atheists I don't know who would. (Maybe Baylor? Don't go to Baylor.) I wouldn't worry, most universities are open to atheists and international students. I think Ann Arbor is supposed to have a good Philosophy program. Good luck, starting school is exciting!
