Hello all :D:

Recently I've been thinking about the whole Karma thing in sects of Hinduism and Buddhism, and one of my Hindu friends, and her entire family are lacto-vegetarian, due to the fact that they don't want to harm an animal, and accumulate the bad karma that it brings.

From a personal standpoint, I just don't want to be a part of an animal's death. It's just a part of the way I want to live. Obviously, this means being strictly vegan. There are health benefits to this too, considering my health ain't the best, going vegetarian has improved it in the past.

Also, giving up meat and animal products seems to be a good form of fasting and self deprivation for some Gods. I mean, my patron, Set, really likes his pork. So I'm not exactly sure that's his thing. My mother in the KO religion is Neith, a huntress...so...um...yeah. (Weirdly, Apollo actually nudged me into considering this, I think.)

So, my questions are:

1) Have any Gods/Paths required that you fast from something? Give up something in your diet or lifestyle? (and if it's not your Patron, has it caused any issues with your Patron God?)

2) Do you deprive yourself for any other, personal reasons.

3) And, any tips for a gal interested in going vegetarian and possibly vegan, in a house full of happy meat eaters? (I've seen there's a thread about this in the food and cooking board too)
Hoping to learn more every day...and not get bored doing it :3

I can only realty give advice on item number three.Sorry.

Well, I think you need to identify certain things that you want to do. Some things people continue to consume while dropping certain meats are seafood, eggs, and milk. There's also little things that are not vegan friendly, like white sugar. Sometimes it's whitened using cow bone char. Do you think all dairy and eggs are bad? Or are free range products okay? How do you see sea life as opposed to land life. Is eating fish the same as eating a cow?

Another thing you need to do is draft up some meal plans for a day, and then look at what nutrients you might be lacking. Some veggies are higher in calcium than others, nuts and seeds are good for other minerals, etc. A very popular food item that can be transformed into many different tasty meals is quinoa. An excellent source of proteins and magnesium, but must be prepared a certain way. It contains saponins and,if cooked wrong, can taste a bit bitter. The possibilities with quinoa are bountiful, and I'm sure you can get the rest of your household hooked on it as well.

A lot of meals can be prepared for a whole family while suiting both the meat eaters and non meat eaters. I personally don't eat beef and pork, while my husband can't get enough. I just cook up his portions in a different pan from mine. Once you get in the habit of that, it's not a big deal. If you're a minor and your parents prepare dinner, offer to help in the kitchen so you don't burden them with the task of making a separate meal for you.

Also try weening yourself. Don't feel like you have to drop everything at once. At my point I knocked out beef and pork, and I'm working myself up to just eating seafood, eggs, and dairy. Don't be ashamed for having cravings. I myself was an avid sausage lover, and substituted it with morningstar meatless sausage. It has good flavor and can be found easily in most supermarkets in the USA.

Not as of yet.

I've been a pescetarian for fourteen years - I gave up beef and pork due to farming practices and chicken due to salmonella (I caught it twice).  Currently, I don't consider it deprivation although at the beginning I would have *killed* for a bacon cheeseburger. ;)  It hasn't affected my relationship with Sekhmet or Neb.y Set at all.

My husband and son both eat meat, and my husband does the cooking.  He makes meals that work both with and without meat and then adds meat to his (and my son's) portion while leaving it off mine.

There's a great cookbook out called The Flexitarian Table that is built for just this sort of thing and if you Google flexitarian you should come up with a ton of recipes and tips.  Good luck!

I couldn't see how either of them would encourage giving up meat, if anything, I get the sense they'd want it more often.

Well, by the time I was called by Sekhmet, I had already given it up, and Neb.y came to me later.  I've not been asked to start eating meat again or to offer it.

I guess it can be chalked up to the netjeru being more than we expect.

I think that would depend on what is healthiest for the people involved.  Some people do better without much meat and others need it more.

Aset has asked me to give up pork and fish.  And Oya has her own taboos, but I don't know which ones pertain to me yet.  Oddly enough, one of them is pork (buffalo, ram and smoke are the others).

I didn't like pork beforehand and the only fish I regularly ate would have been sushi.  I can have shrimp though so I eat shrimp sushi.

Make sure you get all your nutrients.  Do you like Indian food/South Asian food?  There is a great cookbook for that Alternative Vegan by Dino Sarma Weierman.

we'll try this again.

I can only answer question one--sorry.

My patron God, Ganesh, has not, as of yet, asked me to give up anything, but I don't know if that's because he does not mind or if he's leaving it up to me, and if he's leaving it up to me, is it a test? The Hindus are typically vegetarian and I have become increasingly interested in following that path, but does that mean I have to give up that which I love (yes, I apologize to those of you who are vegetarians and vegans, but I love eating meat-I don't love the way they die though).?(I should point out that when my husband deploys or is away I eat at least 90% less meat in my diet) Is there some sort of compromise? Damn, now I'm asking questions. Sorry!

Well... for me, Set is pretty much summed up as 'What about pork? No pork? I want pork. I like pork you know.' I was never much of a fan, so he only really got an offering of the stuff when I wanted to do something special for him.

I've been mostly vegetarian before, and to be honest, I don't miss the meat, unless, say, you shove a medium rare sirloin infront of me... I may occasionally supplement with fish if I absolutely have to, at least, until I build up a good collection of recipes (and find time to cook for myself!).

Thanks for the replies guys :) I'll check out that link and that book for sure. For you guys who like vegan food, or just want different stuff, I found Post Punk Kitchen. I think there's a cookbook out, but it's mostly a blog. I love how she leaves out most of the generic meat look-a-likes and focuses on the cuisine.

I think my main issue might be my lunch during the school days. I take lunch and breakfast into school, mom makes them sometimes, and she knows I'm cutting down the meat. So she'll skip it over, but I'll get stuffed with a cheese sandwich  . I don't expect her to make anything different every single day, hell, I'm an adult, I can do it myself! So I think I'll have to figure out how to plan a week's worth of meals, and do my prep on weekends.

My inner, very OCD-ridden planner is very happy about this lol.
Hoping to learn more every day...and not get bored doing it :3
