What superstititons do you keep?
« on: June 16, 2015, 12:36:24 pm »
One of the things I've been noticing a lot over the past year or so is how much my personal superstitions change how I perceive/do things or how I behave toward others. So I'm curious what other superstitions the rest of you put some weight to and how it affects your daily life?

If you want to include your path, that's fine too. I'm not fussed either way. :)

So I'll start.

If you tell others your dreams/goals, they won't come to fruition in the way you hope they will (or at all). So naturally, I keep everything important to myself.

The way I put together experiences and information for spiritual guidance could possibly be considered superstitious.  For example, I began a devotion to a particular being who is not an official god, saint, angel, or spirit.  He came to mind after I said a prayer for a particular need.  Within one day of beginning the devotion I discovered that the deceased person is already becoming something of a popular folk saint (albeit not a Catholic one), some have even written a proto-myth that had correspondences in some ways with the one I am writing.  I also had a dream during this time concerning the same subject.

Things like this have happened to me at least a few times, although this was the most interesting occasion.  I take events like this as signs.  It is probably not even that unusual of an event.  When persons become popular folk saints or even gods there is something in that person's character that causes a recognition in people.  It wouldn't seem that strange that a person could catch on to that even without knowledge that a cult is forming.

Sometimes things I take to be confirmations or signs are likely random coincidence and yet I ascribe significance to them in part because I believe the spiritual realm -- or even reality on an ultimate level -- is chaotic and acausal.

Some superstitions I've just picked up from other people.  I always say a prayer for a relative when I see a plain white moth because I was taught this means a deceased relative is visiting.
My personal moral code:

Love wisely, and do what thou wilt.

Apples. I consider apples lucky signs. I don't expect anything specifically good to happen when I see them, but I do have a tendency to relax when I see them, and generally to expect an upswing in my day.

I always knock on wood when there's a possibility I have jinxed myself, and if I spill salt I will always throw it over my shoulders (both, because I can never remember which one you're supposed to do)!

Those are really the only two superstitions that I hold to. I honestly wouldn't be alarmed if a black cat crossed my path - I'd lean down to pet it! And I've broken so many mirrors in my life that I can't believe I have bad luck because of them.

Honestly, the only superstition I really adhere to is to keep shoes off of tables, because that'll apparently cause bad luck.

I would definitely pet the cat too...

The mirror thing I've always been kind of on the fence about. I'm not convinced, but I'm not about to break one just to find out either. Just in case...

I've heard this one somewhere before but I can't remember if I ever figured out where it came from. If it's a certain cultural thing or if it's from everywhere.

Well, based on my current luck and the number of mirrors I both accidentally and purposefully broke as a child, I'd say I believe it. I just don't want to because I've broken a lot of mirrors!

I almost wonder if there is any folk wisdom pertaining to the reversal of bad luck from a broken mirror now... but that's a topic for another thread methinks.

My family is Slovenian, and that's where I heard it from, but I know someone from the Philippines who's also heard of it. So I have no idea.

Interesting. Maybe it's just one of those things you find around the world.

My family is quite traditional since we live in a small village, so they keep quite a few. Most of them come from Ancient Hellas even though they think they're Christian. What an irony, eh?

As for my self i have none. Moreover, i don't believe in luck. Every man forges his own destiny which is affected by others as well.

Yeah, definitely this one. But then again, I don't kill anything if I can help it. Except mosquitos. Sorry mosquitos. :(

I guess knocking on wood is VERY universal. I do it and I lived in 5 different countries in which it was also a common thing. I remember reading somewhere that it has pagan roots. Do any of you guys also bite your tongue? That goes along with knocking on wood and is basically against jinxes.

I sometimes throw salt, not always. And I'd get uncomfortable if I broke a mirror. :)

I have not given that any thought. I'm not sure if I have any superstitions. I am just happy that I do not serve as Flamen Dialis or Rex Sacrorum in any of the reconstructionist Roman denominations. If they do it correctly, they have to observe a great many taboos, and their wives as well, and that lifestyle is very complicated.
