Penny bun / porcino
« on: September 17, 2017, 03:27:53 pm »
I wonder if there are any folktales or magical properties on porcini... I just used them for cooking for the first time (dried ones from the store) and was astonished how powerful they felt in my hands. I know it's not the typical magic mushroom, but for me it's magical enough ;)

Does anyone have similar feelings about the porcino or knows folklore about it?

I could only find a reference to Italian folklore that the porcino comes out on new moon and the name means "hog mushroom" (on wikipedia).

(There's plenty on nutritional and biological stuff online...but that can't be all...)

Maybe I'll research more later...

Funny I was just thinking about these (they are know as penny buns or ceps here in the UK). I am hoping to find a few tomorrow. They often grow close to my favourite, the Fly Agaric so I'm hoping I'm going to be able to restock on both of them. I'm not aware of any UK folklore about them though I'm afraid.

I don't know of any particular folklore regarding porcini, but I just want to note that the name actually means "piglet" in Italian. "Porco" would be one way of saying pig, the -ino suffix is a diminutive.
