So, what's your joy?

I come from musical genes - my father used to be in a Beatles tribute band and can play guitar really well (as well as sing).  I however, can't sing very well, and I've never learned to play anything.  I really wish I had taken band as a kid.  I would love to be able to play the violin!

I can keep a beat, though.  I often use a handmade rattle for certain things if that counts.  :p

Sad that your mom talked you out of it :(. What did you end up majoring in?

Tell me about it.  I was all set (and accepted) to start a program majoring in musical theater.  Oh well.  I sang all during school and up until I started having to do major traveling for work - lots of Gilbert & Sullivan performances.

I ended up majoring in Biology, actually.

It seems  a lot of musicians also like biology. I do for one, and my oboe teacher majored in biology until the music program at his school (the same one I may end up going to :D) converted him.

I've played violin for 14 years. Her name is Aarya, and she's just had a spa-day so she's pretty happy right now. ;) I play classical and Irish. I also sing.

Yeah! Weird how that is. I'm a bio major, and two of my violin friends are also bio majors.

I enjoy playing electric guitar and keyboards. I have just recently been getting back into playing and recording some music. I found a software package called Cubase to be really good for recording.

Nothing I enjoy more than creating new art and music

I played the recorder in grade school for a while. Moved to a state w/ grandparents; grandma insisted on piano lessons. I didn't really have either inclination or the discipline to keep it up. I sing, strictly for myself, although my voice is/was good enough that some friends tried to get me to join their church choir. (I declined--because I really have a hard time listening to sermons of any denomination, and because I. Am. Not. A. Morning. Person.)

Nice to see another violinist :)  I learned in grade school, and played through high school, and don't really play regularly anymore, but I do still play from time to time (long enough apart normally that my fingers are sore, but not so long that I forgot how to play).

I also have a recorder which I would have to brush up on to actually remember more than "Michael row your boat ashore" and a tin whistle that I am wanting to learn how to play.  I fiddle with singing, I am almost constantly singing something, though I haven't ever had any training for singing.

It's cool to see quite a few people play recorder. Often people think it's a beginner instrument for primary school children, but I must say I don't find it that easy. I seem to have lost some lung volume since I played saxophone, maybe because of my allergy or it might simply be lack of practice. But I struggle a lot not to go out of breath while playing 'just' the alto recorder.

I play the bass, and played piano when I was 10, want to learn the harp :)

I'm just curious...

I used to play bass, but have fallen out of habit.  My buddy says every line I play sounds like a Cure bass line, what the hell's wrong with that?

I tried learning mandolin to play in a Renaissance Faire troupe, discovered two things: 1) I'm terrible with chords, and 2) I hate those teeny tiny strings.  I also hated tuning the little bastard machine.  When I snapped the second A (again) I pretty much gave up.  So I wound up borrowing a tambourine from one of the other guys, played it like a drum, had a blast, discovered that I can keep time even better after a flagon of ale.

Lately I've been thinking about picking up a 6-string accoustic, only one problem.  Tiny strings.  And chords.

I'm just curious...

I recently started to learn guitar and picked up my recorder again.

I've played recorder and keyboard as a kid, but decided as a teen to play saxophone. I gave back my borrowed saxophone when I moved away and never had enough money to buy one.

I know it sounds like I have learned a lot, but actually I can't play any instrument really well. I'm looking forward to learning guitar well enough for accompaning campfire singing. :)

I love folk songs and Jazz and I don't need to be a Mozart. ;)

So, what's your joy?

I played the recorder fairly well as a child, and graduated to the flute in secondary school. I'm passably good, and on occasion I break out my dad's Jethro Tull albums to jam along with Ian Anderson :p

However, in recent years I have developed a greater liking for singing, through choir practice, and there are mechanical issues there... Wish me luck finding a Byzantine chant course without having to move to eastern Europe!

My harp, a 32 string folk harp. She's beautiful and I love playing her but don't do it as often as I'd like. I've had great teachers but they all wanted to go down the musical exam route which isn't why I picked it up. My classical teacher was by far the most frustrating...:whis:

I went through many many piano teachers and I always steadfastly refused to do examinations.
My sisters and I all started piano lessons when we were 5, I haven't been able to play for close on 5 years because I cannot afford a piano(or a decent keyboard).
I also used to sing on my own and with my two sisters, we used to do a wide mix of genres in three part harmony(from Andrews sisters, to old hymns). I don't sing at all anymore though, there's buckets of drama tangled up in it and I get no joy from it.

I also dabbled with a couple of electric guitars, but since I had issues with my wrist it just gets too painful.
