What are you currently working on?

I am currently knitting this shawl because I hate myself enough to keep on trying to knit shawls.

Just kidding. Seriously, it's beautiful, and it's going to look great when it's done, but it is taking...so...long. I'm a slow knitter and I feel like I'll be 87 by the time this thing is finished. (Crochet shawls? I can finish a huge one in a few days. So much faster for me.)

And yes, it's called a "kerchief" but you can make it bigger to make it a shawl and as it's a gift for someone and I want to give them a shawl....sigh.

I was given a knitting loom and apparently according to a friend who knits the regular way (and can do really complicated looking stuff involving spreadsheets, virtually!) it's way quicker.  You can increase and decrease as you go (I feel like there's proper terminology for that which I can't currently remember...) but not sure whether you can do really, really complex stuff.  As for me, it's still just scarves (the long straight kind) and squares for a patchwork blanket (mainly it's something to do which helps prevent restless legs from setting in whilst having to sit still for whatever reason, e.g. long journeys).

I like the look of your project, a lot.

Pictures may follow eventually if I can produce reasonable quality ones.

What are you currently working on?

I recently became fascinated by marquetry, and my first project (a tea box) is on my desk, waiting for me to cut out the pieces. Lately I've been distracted by messing around with aquarelle pencils though.

Been doing a lot of wood-block carving and printing lately.

I am a crocheter, as well, and have tried to teach myself to knit several times without any success. I always end up putting down the needles and grabbing my hook!

Hello fellow crafters!

What are you currently working on?

Not sure if this qualifies as "crafting", but here's my short list of projects:

  • Mom has requested a tool stand for her stained glass crafting...something which she can hang various cutters and hand tools on, and easily carry it/them around to her work areas.
  • Also on the "Mommy" list...she had a wall-mounted ironing board installed in the laundry room when her house was built Many Moons Ago. She hasn't been able to use it as the nearby refrigerator blocks good access to the board when folded down. She wants to replace it with a same-sized in-wall cabinet, much like a medicine cabinet, where she can store dog food cans and similar items.
  • My house needs new garage doors (badly!). I'd like to build my own, and also include a wicket door (man door, pass door) in one of the garage doors. I understand this is common in Europe but over here, as far as I can tell, it's strictly a custom job...and the custom builders want $10,000 just to say 'hello'...

I am a crocheter, as well, and have tried to teach myself to knit several times without any success. I always end up putting down the needles and grabbing my hook!

It took me several years to succeed at learning knitting. My Oma tried to teach me when I was a kid but I couldn't pick it up.

My recommendations for learning knitting:

  • the Stitch 'n Bitch book. That's how I taught myself.
  • a simple garter stitch project with BIG NEEDLES and CHUNKY YARN.

My very first project was from said book. I made the Go-Go Garter Stitch Scarf with big needles and chunky yarn. Using big needles and chunky yarn helps you figure out the stitches and the motions AND helps you see progress faster, which ups your confidence and makes it easier to continue.
