New Toy
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:10:56 pm »
I now own a Shopsmith Mark V. I bought it second- or third-hand from a man whose father had bought it in 1980, but got very little use out of it before he developed health problems. His son inherited it about ten years back but never used it, and when no one in the family wanted it he put it up for sale on Craigslist.

The basic machine is convertible to a table saw, drill press, horizontal boring machine, wood lathe, and disc sander. I also received a bandsaw accessory (powered by the main unit's motor) and some basic shaping tools.

Now to learn how to use it!

That is nifty! If I had space (and wasn't terrified of power tools) I'd want something like that.

I had a friend when I lived in San Antonio with one of those. It was nice -- although not as nicer as having separate tools. For smaller projects (size-wise smaller, that is), it was great. For projects that involved larger pieces of wood (ripping sheets of plywood, for example), it could be a bit of a pain. But it sure did a lot for its size.

I do have a stand-alone 10" Craftsman table saw which I picked up secondhand elsewhere, although it's lacking a rip fence. I should be able to use that for the big pieces.

Some roller stands for support would also be a big help with the larger items...
