Need inspiration for special beads
« on: December 14, 2018, 10:24:51 pm »
So, I have a strand of simple, small round carnelian beads, and UPG telling me to make them into something related to my practice.  And that's about all I have got.

Prayer beads seem a possibility but a bit Pinterest-trendy at the moment ( I've never used them before and not sure whether I would or not, though I am definitely one to fidget with amulets and everything else, so it's not totally without appeal on that basis).

I'm just feeling like I'm failing to see the obvious here.  Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions for me?

I have similar feelings about prayer beads--they seem appealing considering my fidgeting, but I've never used them before and don't know if their intended use would come naturally.

It depends. What kind of jewelry do you usually wear? What kind of jewelry would you like to wear? It would probably be best to start from there so you don't wind up making yourself a lovely devotional item that you never use or wear.

Some people I know simply hold prayer beads in their hands while they're saying spontaneous prayers.  It becomes a tangible focus, but they don't necessarily go from bead to bead.  Sometimes they might say prayers for various people remembered at each bead, too.  I don't use prayer beads too terribly often, but I always have some in my pocket as a reminder of my spirituality.

Hello - my name is raya and I am new to this forum.  I do have a thought for your beads though. I'm thinking that as long as you are 'actively' searching for a purpose for them you may not come up with anything.  I would simply place them near to where I spend a lot of my time when my mind is being allowed to wander - phase out I guess you would call it. Allow the 'universe' to help you decide what to use them for.  Sometimes we have to just let things be and allow answers to come through. I don't know what you mean by UPG  though so perhaps you have already done this - allowing ideas to come through.  If no answers come within a week or so then use them as a sort of pendulum.  Play with them and let your own essence fill them and they will serve a purpose.

Hmm...I usually just wear simple pendants---in fact if there isn't a good reason NOT to,  I will almost always have one and sometimes up to three.

I've occasionally worn beaded bracelets,  but unfortunately most jobs I can do involve computer use, so anything that impedes keyboard or mouse speed isn't a great idea. Bracelets are less trouble than rings, though.  Possibly a cuff bracelet tight enough not to slide around would work.  I *used* to be known for wearing elaborate beaded earrings, but again, most jobs will have me in headphones, which makes that a problem.

What about a charm that could either be slipped onto a chain/cord to be a pendant or dangled as a pendulum for meditation and divinations, as was suggested upthread? Something flexibly multi-use seems appropriate.

Anklets? I've used them periodically for oath-holding jewellery that I want to wear for an extended period (one to three months, usually, but all the time, including sleeping). They're surprisingly non-obvious to other people, even if you're like me and wear calf-length skirts pretty much all the time.

(I also can't do bracelets for the same computer reasons, and I have but one neck.)

Well, that would be good in general,  but it's a strand of 61 equal-sized beads, which doesn't automatically suggest that kind of usage.  Maybe they could be strung onto some type of formed wire shape, and I suppose I don't have to use the whole strand, though my instincts at this time are more to add than subtract. If left as is with a clasp put on they'd be a choker.

How are you with yarncraft? You could string it into a piece of ritual clothing (detail around the neck of a shawl or into a scarf you wear ONLY when communicating with deity) :)

Thank you for your response.  I have been doing pretty much that, but sometimes it helps to hear others' ideas even if I don't directly use them.

UPG, as you might find out if you spend enough time here, stands for Unverifiable Personal Gnosis, i.e. things you get from your own personal interactions with Deity/Spirit/Whatever-you-call-it, rather than things that are in books or widely accepted or provable as a general truth.

In this case, my UPG is that my whole personal pantheon effectively decided to come together and bless these beads for me (carnelian has always been my favorite amulet stone, and I lost my previous ones in moving a couple of years ago).

Presently I am leaning towards the idea of adding some other beads from my rather large stash of craft supplies, with appropriate cleansing and charging of my own, and making a longer strand that can be wrapped and worn in different ways so as not to interfere with whatever it is I'm doing at a given time.

I also feel like it should have some kind of focal charm or pendant added to it, but I don't yet know what that would be.  Presumably something will turn up.

I have somewhat the same problem with a string of Obsidian beads.  I am drawn to Obsidian in spiritual practices but emeralds otherwise.  Problem is that the obsidian necklace was to have a 'ring' attached to it.  A ring was given to me in a dream/vision a number of years ago so I bought a ring with the 'person' involved in mind.  However whenever I wore the necklace it was like the whole universe of entities was trying to get into my head at the same time.  To make a long story short I got angry one day and threw the ring away.  So now I have the obsidian necklace that feels like a really heavy weight around my neck if I put it on.  I become acutely aware that obsidian is in 'my' reality a very powerful stone born of fire and water and then ejected out of the volcano. So, I end up with a string of obsidian beads laying in my drawer.  I don't know if I can go back to its original purpose or not and I don't know if I want to.  Life is more peaceful now. But if I do as I suggested in an earlier post the same thought comes back to me - start again.
