Making a Brighids cross with grass stems?
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:31:50 am »
Has anyone tried this?

I know traditionally they are made with reeds/rushes but I don't have anywhere near me that I can collect them and it's quite important to me that I "recycle" stuff when I'm crafting when I can. so i was thinking maybe If i dry out the long grass stems I could make one with them?

anyone tried this?

I say weave them green and let them dry in the cross formation.  They'll be more flexible and easier to work with.

I did, works great. Any type of grass or reed, really. Let soak for a few hours to make pliable (if needed) and weave them.

I will add (belatedly) that this will work better if you've already had some practice making them. If making Brigid's crosses is a new craft for you, starting with highly-cooperative materials like pipecleaners is really helpful for skills development.
