I made an athame
« on: August 31, 2017, 09:11:30 pm »
I made myself an athame. (see attached, if it works)

It's made out of a bone paper-folder with suede lacing on the handle. It's supposed to evoke the Egyptian symbol of the Ox Foreleg, which was associated with Set and divine power, hence the holes in the shape of the Big Dipper (which is connected to the same symbol) among other things.

Thing is, I'm not entirely sure why I made this. I'm not any flavor of Wiccan and I'm not very interested in magic. I saw the folders in the art-supply store and thought, I could make an athame out of that. Which gradually turned into, I should make an athame out of that.

It's got a lot of energy, that's for sure. I have a vague idea of using it to draw sigils and such, but I have yet to decide what. It named itself, which is ... not the first time that's happened with my artwork, but still odd. I thought about making a scabbard for it, but apparently it's a skyclad athame.

Nice work! It looks great.

Being a namer, I'd like to know if you care to share: What did it name itself?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Oh, that's nifty. I wouldn't have thought to use a bone folder that way. I like what you've done with it. It looks really good. I like the association with the ox leg and Set, that's cool.

And if it helps, I'm not Wiccan either, but I still have a blade. I use it for encircling and cutting and pointing at things. For me, it's a ritual tool as much as I use it for pure spellwork. It seems to work well enough at any rate. I'm sure you'll figure out what to use it for as you get to know it.

Nice job!

Something similar happened to me a few months ago. I picked up a piece of driftwood which decided it had to be a wand. I don't use wands, never have and I can't see why I ever would but anyway....

I shaped it a little, oiled it and added a leather handle and waited to see what happened. I had no desire to use it myself. It wanted to be a wand but it obviously wasn't my wand.

A couple of weeks later it was seized upon by a friend who follows a very different path from me; love at first sight! I gave it to him happily and it's now in the service of a central American tradition. Quite a turnabout for a piece of Welsh wood but they are very happy together.

Meet Sharsu the Awakening. I have no idea what the first part means; the second part is fairly obvious.

I love the name; it has a nice, epic ring to it.

Nice. Do you do any ritual cutting?

Not sure what you mean here, but if you mean symbolic cutting, not really. And if you mean physical cutting, not with this athame; you can't tell from the picture, but the edge is quite rounded.

Very awesome!

I've had that impulse before....seen something and knew it would make a neat tool, then felt moved to make that tool, even if it was something I rarely use (or saw no use for in the future).  I actually have a few tools like that now, that I love the idea of, love having...and never use.
