Advice: CPU Cooler
« on: April 24, 2019, 07:14:54 am »
I'm in the market for a new cpu cooler/fan. The one I've had for several years now has up and died, and I'm a bit worried that prolonged usage of my computer without said cooler will be bad for said CPU's health...
So any recommendations? Should I go with a fan cooler (Which I have now) or use one of those new liquid coolers instead?

Currently, I have a CoolerMaster - don't ask which model, because it didn't come with a box - but it's actually too big for my case. My CPU is an AMD® Phenom(tm) ii x6 1090t processor × 5 .

I check out the Tom's Hardware web site whenever I need current hardware info and reviews. Here's a link to their April 2019 "Best CPU Coolers" Page:

The last two boxen I've built (one AMD, one Intel) have been liquid cooled and I've been very happy with the results. I absolutely swear by Corsair for cooling.

My own thought is that unless you're overclocking and/or into extreme gaming, liquid cooling is overkill. Go with a good-quality fan cooler with heat pipes, and make sure that you have good air circulation within the case (in other words, that you have sufficient case fans installed). Many current production motherboards, especially the high-powered ones, have the capability to experiment with the fan settings and determine the best speed to operate them at to maximize cooling while minimizing noise.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - TBH, I forgot I made this thread, but an update:

I still haven't replaced the fan because it'll intermittently work. I've removed dust, and tried different power sources on the motherboard for it, and it'll work sometimes. Once I get the credit card down a bit more I'll buy a new cooling apparatus based on what you all suggested.

When you do, this is what I recommend to thoroughly clean the old thermal grease from your CPU and heat sink before applying new thermal grease. You'll need a "lint-free cloth"; a clean coffee filter (really!) will do the trick.
