New minor, new beginnings!
« on: May 30, 2017, 01:30:40 pm »
So lately I've been really stressed about a lot of things. Trying to finish up my last year of school, baby on the way, money struggles, toddler struggles..etc. On top of all of it I realized that I wasn't taking care of emotional self or my soul. I have hopped around between faiths a lot until getting frustrated and abandoning it, lately though, I have stopped putting pressure on myself to have a specific faith and have been reading and meditating a lot, trying to connects with different gods/goddesses that I haven't before.

It seems to be making a positive difference because I have started to focus and make some changes that I'm feeling good about. I'm graduating with a major in Economics next Spring and I only have one economics class left. I chose a Statistics minor because I was advised that it would be a good supplement to economics, but I'm not super passionate about statistics. The last statistics class was such a pain for me to get through and the classes are almost all male (which normally doesn't bother me, but being pregnant makes it a little uncomfortable). The problem is, to finish my minor and my college career, I have to basically take all senior level statistics classes next year. I've just had a bad feeling about it, especially with a new baby. I don't want to put off college because I'm miserable in a statistics program, particularly because I've come so far. I've done really well in my economics program and even work in the department part time.

So I've decided to change my minor to Religious Studies. I'm much more interested and passionate about the subject; therefore, I think I will be more successful. Plus they have a lot more online options which I think will be helpful this year. I'm feeling much better about this direction. I might have to change my grad school direction, but maybe that's a good thing! Anyways, I just wanted to share some positivity, here's hoping everything goes smoothly.  ;D

Well, here are my two cents (or less):  I started and finished nursing school with a toddler (she was only 18mos when I started).  I was only 20 at the time and her dad was USELESS.  So, it can be done:).  I strongly encourage you to persist and finish.  It may be harder than you think, or maybe not.  It may take longer than you planned, but don't give up.  You and your child will be far better off in the long run for the stability you will be able to provide.

As far as the hopping around between faiths bit- I too looked for a while, years ago, for something that fit me.  If the shoe doesn't fit- don't freaking wear it!:)  I finally came to the conclusion, that whether it is style of practice or spirituality- I don't have to fit into someone else pre-prepared neat little box.  Some folks need a defined religion, it's just the way their psyche works, and that's great too.  But, if that's not you- don't try to force anything.  Looking forward to further discussion and wish you the best with your endeavors.

Thank you, yes I'm not giving up school, just rearranging my plan. I only have one class left for my major but need about 21 credits to graduate which is about what I need for the minor. I just don't want to get discouraged from finishing because I don't like my minor. I don't think the statistics minor is worth the stress right now. I think finishing this year is doable, as long as I don't have any complications but I probably shouldn't could on that. So close though!

I agree, although it's definitely something I've had to learn over the past few years. Kudos to you for finishing so young with a toddler! Thank you and I look forward to future discussions with you too! ;)

Congrats on the minor change, and I hope it all goes well for you!

I ended up going with a major I was passionate about in the end, because I just couldn't do well in the ones that I was "meh" about. So far I've yet to work in my field but I don't regret taking the major because it enriched my life in other ways.

I think our society in general tends to look at college/university as a "means to a job" and that that's the only value in it, but finding a field of study that enriches your life spiritually, emotionally, mentally -- that's super important too. I think we've lost sight of that. Good on you for finding a minor that will enrich you! :)

(Also online options can be super helpful, so that is a definite bonus!)

I agree, I do see the "job" point, but I also don't think everyone needs to be an engineer or a lawyer. There is value in many different fields in many different ways. I also think that an A in a subject you excel in always better than a C in something you are forcing yourself through.

Thank you for the kind words! ;)
