Author Topic: I finally understand the analogy (Read 1971 times)

So I've always heard and understood the spoon analogy. But to be honest, until something happened and I ran out of spoons I realized I'd only had sympathy, not empathy.

I finally got a diagnosis of why I've been so run down. Why I have barely been able to drag myself to school and am then incapacitated from anything else that day. Why I've lost 15 pounds in 3 months and never want to eat. Why my lips, tongue, and gums are getting black spots on them. Today I got the diagnosis I've suspected for at least a month of Addison's disease, aka primary adrenal insufficiency.

Despite my diagnosis I'm actually happy. Happy because I know there are things they can do, there are meds I can take to get me back close to where I was before. But now I've had that experience, and I understand better all of you who have. And I empathize.

When I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease I went around enthusiastically telling everyone I know "I HAVE AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE!" and kind of weirding them out but I was so damn happy to get a diagnosis finally.

The only person who really got me was the friend with an undiagnosed pain condition (which eventually turned out to be 'his spine is so badly fucked that he was yea close to paralysis', I believe) who gave me a giant hug and said, "Congratulations!"

So, congratulations!

I sympathize as I have never been through an ordeal like yours. But I am very happy for you that you finally got a diagnosis you can work with. It must be so draining not knowing. I hope and pray the meds will get you back to a point where you even forget you have the disease.

Same here. My diagnosis came after 20 years of shifting symptoms and constant high octane anxiety. It was a blessing to find out there was something organic wrong with me, and even if it is incurable, there are actions I can take.

Before that, I thought the symptoms were imaginary/created by my anxious mind and not “real.”
