Offerings for Bride?
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:39:09 pm »
I'm building a shrine to Bride for a number of reasons:

1) I live in a town which bears her name so she's a kind of 'tribal goddess' for people living here (if they're Pagan).

2) I'm hoping to become a bard and with Bride being a goddess of poetry she is a logical choice for an aspiring wordsmith.

I've been thinking for some time on what sort of offerings to make to her.  Milk's the obvious one, given what she represents, but I was thinking of other stuff as well.  I'm guessing her crosses made from reeds or something stiff-but-flexible, and poems I've written would possibly go down well too.

Is there anything I haven't thought of?  Food offerings or otherwise?

Any info would be most welcome!

Water.  Springs and wells are sacred to Her.  Wine or liquor.  Milk.  Juice.

Candles, for fire.  Lamps.

Baked goods like cakes and cookies come to mind.

Hope that helps.

I am the Goddess of Who I can Become. I mix the magic of the sorceress with the blade of a warrior. I walk the liminal pathways to see the face of the Goddess, both terrible and kind. As She stares back at me, I tremble in awe and ecstasy.  --SatAset

And this makes me think of Her as the Goddess of the Forge.  Instead of iron, food!

Beer as She is said to have invented that drink.
When I celebrated Imbolc, I used tohonor Her with libations of that and getting busy with handmaking candles, which is a really interesting process for someone who likes crafts.:)

Wow, that was fast!  I just remembered I've got a friend who is going down to Glastonbury and says he'll get some water from Chalice Well for me :)

It's strange, I've been thinking to myself recently that I need to learn how to cook & bake.  Out of necessity mostly (bachelor) but also because it'd be fun and I'd love to see what I can make!

I've heard chocolate goes down quite well (I'm guessing white and milk rather than plain).  Is this true?

P.S. Thanks to all who've contributed!

You've gotten great responses so far, so I'll just say, yes, chocolate seems to be welcomed.  I don't use white chocolate, but it would probably be fine. I usually use dark chocolate.

Irish Mist, Bailey's Irish Cream, and Jameson whiskey have also been well received.

Given her association with bees, anything to do with Honey would also be good

Mead is what I use for libations to her - she seems to really enjoy it.

That's good to know!  I'm not a huge fan of honey but I'll keep it in mind.

You're welcome!

One other thing:  As much as possible, I actually just try to share my own meal with Her.  Whatever it is.  When that's not possible or sufficient, or for special occasions or thank-yous, I use the other things.

For REALLY special thank-yous, I make offerings in the form of monetary donations to organizations that do work I associate closely with Brighid.  I donate to Solas Bhride, Heifer International, the ASPCA, and the Humane Society, but, obviously, your choices would depend on your own associations.

Ask him to get you some water from the White Spring  in Well Lane as well. It's just past the entrance to the Chalice gardens and the path up the Tor starts from it.   It is dedicated specifically to Brigid (and the water tastes much nicer than the better know Chalice Well!)  It's loaded with calcite rather than iron and having red and white springs so close together is very special.

Much less well known  there is a shrine there to her and it's an amazing place.  Run by local volunteers its only open in the afternoon but you can collect water from it even if the building is closed. Unlike Chalice Gardens entrance is free. He  can also collect water from the Chalice Well in the lane without having to pay the entrance charge. The tap is almost directly opposite the White Spring.

That's good to know though I have no plans on drinking any of it.  I'll mention the White Spring to him; he might like that.
