Giving a talk on flamekeeping!
« on: January 07, 2018, 03:22:45 pm »
HI everyone, I've been asked to give a talk on Brigidine Flamekeeping within the pagan community at our local pagan moot later this month. I'm currently planning my talk and trying to cover as much as possible, here is my rough plan so far:

1. What is flamekeeping? The history and my own practice as a flamekeeper.
2. Who is Brigid?
3. How does it work (the shift schedules, what do flamekeepers do!)
4. Communities of flamekeepers.
5. Controversies (won't go into this here naturally due to the SIG rules but I will be giving an overview of it in the talk).
6. Resources (books, communities, etc. i plan to create a list for the moot Facebook group for people to access after the talk)

Is there anything else I should mention? Is thare anything integral to your shift as an individual that you would suggest for a new flamekeeper to try?
Thanks!

I can't think of anything; it looks to me like you have it covered.

I'd love to see the result, whether video/audio or a transcript, or an essay version of your talk, once you've done it.

One thing you mention intrigues me, and also confuses me a bit:

5. Controversies (won't go into this here naturally due to the SIG rules but I will be giving an overview of it in the talk).

I can't imagine what controversies might violate the SIG rules just to discuss the existence of!

I can imagine controversies that, if the disputes themselves happened in the SIG, would violate the SIG rules - indeed, I suspect that just such a dispute might have been what led to those rules being made explicit. (A bit more context of why it was so spectacularly egregious, and this account wouldn't be complete without a link to Marilyn's snarky take on it.)

The only other thing I see in the SIG rules that might relate to your mention of controversy is the point about debate over the acceptability of male keepers, which, yeah, not up for debate here, so there's not much more that can be said about it beyond, 'there are people who feel strongly about Brigidine Flamekeeping being women-only.'

I'm planning on creating detailed flashcards (the moot is in a cafe so fairly relaxed) but will likely write up a longer essay for our local pagan community that I could pop up at some point.  ;D

Yeah it was the male keepers thing, I have come across it naturally and interested people might after the talk so figured I should include it in the talk (we're a very open, inclusive and lgbt-friendly local group anyway!). I just didn't elaborate above due to the rules!   :D

You might find it helpful to check out Clann Bhride's materials. https://clannbhride.wordpress.com.

The table of contents in our Book of Hours might help you check for topics to include. (The Book of Hours is available for free pdf download: https://clannbhride.wordpress.com/theology/about/)

And we have a number of informational essays in the Book of Hours and others posted in our website, as well as a Brighid resource list (https://clannbhride.wordpress.com/articles-and-essays/clann-bhride-resource-list/) that might also be helpful.

Plus a pretty active Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/clannbhride/).

Hope that helps!

Oh thank you Aster! I forgot that I have the book downloaded on my computer somewhere- I will definitely make use of those resources, thank you.
I'm only sorry I haven't been able to visit Solas Bhride in KIldare yet and see their set-up, last time I was at the well it was only being built so I couldn't go in.

I'm quite nervous about this talk but hopefully it will go well!

Oh thank you Aster!

*snip*

I'm quite nervous about this talk but hopefully it will go well!

You're very welcome! One of the primary reasons Clann Bhride exists is to share info, so we're always happy to do that.

Your talk is going to be great! Brighid will make sure of that.
