We are looking for volunteer thread starters!
« on: July 21, 2018, 08:29:20 pm »
The Cauldron Staff are looking for volunteers to start threads and spark discussions! What we are asking you to do is:
1. Pick a section of the forum that you are interested in (eg. Holidays and Festivals, or Witchcraft, Hoodoo and Folk Magic)
2. Commit to starting a certain amount of threads in that topic each month (pick a number between 1 and 4).

Can you start one thread a month on your favorite topic? PM Sefiru or SunflowerP and let us know. The staff will review the requests, and those we approve will become official Cauldron Volunteers.

Of course, you don't have to be an official threadstarter to start threads; all Cauldron members are welcome to start threads on any topics you want to discuss - that's why we're here, after all!

I would really not enjoy feeling like I HAD to start threads, but I'll be happy to start thinking up some topics and going through older threads to see if I might have anything different to necropost with.

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this;
You (and all members) are free to start threads whenever you feel like it!

Rather than just reviving old threads, you might consider looking for ideas in old threads (and even the archive board) and then using your thoughts to start a new thread. That's a good way to get a conversation going; folks who posted on an old thread might have fresh thoughts on the topic by now, and new members can join in on the conversation from the beginning.

I need a bit of clarification on this. Does this mean that, if we commit to becoming thread starters, we won't be allowed to start any other threads? Or do we pick a number of *official* threads we are willing to start each month? Or is it a hard cap limiting ALL threads we can start in that section?

I would hate to be locked out of posting more than 4 threads each month. I mean, that would really limit by ability to engage with the community here, since new thread ideas pop into my head all the time.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

Ha, no; we would hate to lock people out of starting more threads! All the (apparent) limitations you see here are for the purpose of providing structure - 'one thread per month in X subforum' (as well as whatever other thread ideas the person might have beyond that) is much easier, for many people, to feel able to commit to, and to meet the commitment, than just a nebulous 'start threads!'

So a volunteer threadstarter doesn't have to pick just one subforum; they can pick two or three or more subforums, or not restrict themselves to specific subforums (it'd be 1-4 per month overall, not 1-4 per subforum). And the 1-4 per month is a minimum to which they've committed, not a limitation on starting more threads than that.

Someone for whom 'new thread ideas pop into my head all the time' is exactly what we're looking for - insofar as there's anything like an upper limit on that, it's that experience has shown us that even the most idea-filled threadstarter can run out of ideas after a while, if they post threads for all their thread ideas as fast as they have the ideas. But that's up to each individual threadstarter to manage for themselves, not something staff will try to micromanage. Ideally, a good threadstarter will still be starting threads regularly two years or more down the road, because the point of all this is to ensure that TC has, and keeps having, conversations.

Sefiru might have things to add to this, but I figured it should have a response as quickly as possible, so I wrote one.

Sounds about right to me!

I think I'll make this a sticky thread, since we're pretty much always open to taking on new volunteer threadstarters.
