* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

First of all, we appreciate new members, and we're always glad to see them welcomed to our little home on the Net.

That said - it is really daunting for a lot of people to show up to a full page of unread messages that sum up to "welcome!" - especially when these posts are more than a day or two old.  We're happy to welcome people, but not everyone needs to be welcomed by every person.  If the thread is more than a day or two old, please - they don't need to be specifically welcomed by each person.

Please, just use common sense.  Once there have been a few welcomes, we don't all need to add one more.  Especially if the thread has been around for a while.  We don't need people turning away from the introduction board and putting it on ignore because there are 25+ identical posts of "welcome!" to people, especially if there were 25+ identical posts of welcome by someone else to the same people the day before!

I know new people are exciting.  But not everyone has to respond to every intro post.  If there isn't a specific comment, please, after a day or two, don't add a blanket welcome.

Thank you, Shadow. I'm going to be even more blunt as a few people are turning welcome messages into "being annoying" and I don't want to stop a useful thing (making new members feel welcome) because of a few people who go overboard.

1) Only staff members or long time regular members need to even consider welcoming everyone.

2) Do not post a "Welcome to TC" type message in a welcome thread  started more than 3 days ago. If you don't have some actual discussion to contribute in those rare Intro threads where the poster  starts a discussion about something non-introduction like, after a few  days your welcome message just seems silly. The only except that might be appropriate is personally greeting a person you actually know and invited to the board -- but you are unlikely to do that with a simple "Welcome to TC" type message.

3) If you arrive at the forum and see you "need" to welcome 5 or 10 new  people, chances are good that you should not do so. See rule #2 above.   Besides, if you flood the board with welcome messages like that, the  huge block of "welcome replies" from you  in the new threads just makes  you look lazy -- too lazy to actually welcome people as they arrive.

4. Remember to TRIM the quoted intro message to only a sentence or two.

Thank you, Shadow.

Thank you for this clarity!

As for my confusion, I've read intros and felt like it was polite to say something, but was unsure. I liked it when people welcomed me, but still was unsure because it feels strange to me to do it. It's like welcoming someone into a house that isn't mine. But I didn't want to be impolite either.

I got my head stuck in an etiquette loop that I think is located up my bum.

This is a whew, for me. Thanks!

I'll still read the intros when I can, but will only holla if there is a particular need to do it. Like if my mum finds this place. Oh, I'll holla then.

Welcoming new members isn't really the problem. The problem is we recently have a few people would come in once every week or so and post a short welcome message to everyone who has joined since they last welcomed everyone new, resulting in a "wall" of around 10 welcome messages from the same person on the "new Posts" list. And some of these welcomes are for people who were "new" over a week ago.....

Thank you! But don't worry, you were not the only one doing this. And I admit that it seems like a nice thing to do -- at least until you look at it more closely.
