ADMIN: Gender in Profile
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:13:00 pm »
I've added Gender to the Profile fields. Unlike SMF which only had Male and Female options, here you have the option to fill in another gender if neither male or female fit. Note: Using this option to be funny is considered rude and annoying.

Thank you so much for the option to fill a gender in. It's a small gesture that means a lot to me. :)

The only reason this wasn't done on SMF what the "gender" item was hard-coded in.  Here, I got to define it.

I actually wondered when I signed up to the last forum why there were only two options, considering what I had read whilst lurking. This explains it :P

I'd never thought of "geek" as a gender identity descriptor before.

I got it from someone on alt.polyamory on usenet, and I think Sunflower got it from me.

Think about it, though:  "gender roles" are clusters of expectations, right?  Someone who is a particular gender is expected to dress a certain way, act a certain way, have certain kinds of jobs, and will get bonus slack for specific issues ("male" gets slack for emotional incompetence, mainstream-wise, for example, while "female" gets slack for emotional excess).

There's a particular set of clothing and behaviour expected of a geek, they're generally assumed to be in technical jobs and similar things, and social ineptitude gets written off as "that's the technical guy, don't mind him/her".

This makes really sense.
And adding, that I am happy for everybody else too, that we have that gender field now. :)

I did indeed, and it's interesting to know that there's someone you got it from (which I think makes it one of the more common nth-gender descriptors:D).  And, yep, it's the performativity - behaving like a geek comes naturally to me (which could well be socialization; I was raised by geeks), but my "womanly" behavior all comes out awkward and, well, geeky.

LOL... I may have to start using that myself. Though I'm not socially inept, I just usually have little use for tact. ;)

And with me I'm not so much socially inept as I just have little use for people.
