Website Shows Stars When You Were Born
« on: September 23, 2017, 09:08:06 am »
I'm not into astrology, but rather astronomy, so I found this website very cool:

https://in-the-sky.org/skymap2.php

I'm sure there are others like it, but this one lets you put in any date, time, and location to see what the starry sky looked like at that moment. (The year doesn't matter, since the shift in the star field from year to year is infinitesimal.) So you can use it to see what constellations were overhead at the moment of your birth...and even if you were born in daylight hours, these stars were still there; you just couldn't see them.

It's only good for the stars; the positions of the moon and planets vary year to year. (That's for you astrologers to sort out!) And since it only names the constellations, not the individual stars, you'll have to go an extra step to research the names of the stars that comprise the constellations if you want to know that info.

I was born a few hours before daybreak, and I just searched for NYC to discover that Altair had just risen almost due east at the moment of my birth. Heh.

(Of course, that's true for a shitload of people born over the years in the Northern Hemisphere in the spring in the wee hours of the morning, but heck, I'll take it.)

Now I'm dreaming of getting a black motorcycle jacket and having that star field emblazoned on the back...

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I did put my birthdate in and took a look, which was kinda fun - but what I'm really excited about is, I didn't have that site in my bookmarks, and it looks very useful, at least as useful as any other star-chart site I have bookmarked, and maybe more. So thank you!

I've often been known to quip, 'I'm an astronomy witch, not an astrology witch,' and that shows here, I guess :D.

Very cool!

Of late I'm learning more about jyotish, Vedic or Hindu astrology, which is very different from western astrology. The Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical zodiac, as western astrology uses. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, in Vedic astrology our birth constellations are one behind western. For example, I was born July 15, 19[mut57ters with hand over mouth :D) which is Cancer in the west. But by jyotish, I am actually Mithuna (a male and female couple rather than male twins)... Gemini! That must explain my Bipolar.

I hope this didn't hijack the thread, but I thought it would be useful for those who are into astrology.
