I have a small manga collection as well: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, St. Dragon Girl, Cardcaptor Sakura,Tokyo Mew Mew and Yona of the Dawn.

I have a small collection of mangas as well, limited by my bookshelf that is more than full, and a badly need to be replaced by a much bigger one.  I saw the anime Yona of the Dawn and really loved it, started to read the manga which I find awesome, and I started to buy the first volumes in French.  You can see more there:

I was wondering if anyone here is a Comic Book fan. I grew up on Comic Books, Marvel, DC, and Others. Mainly a Marvel Fan though. I learned to read from comics, then later to draw a bit also. It seems to me that modern Superheroes are similar to some myths. Superman and Hercules seem to have some things in common. Anyway, I was wondering if Superheroes and related Pop Culture stuff is relevant to anyone else.

I grew up reading very old comics that my grandparents had kept for 'the kids' (which has been pretty much all the kids growing up), so old Archie, Sad Sack, Casper...that era.

Then, when I was in gradeschool I stumbled across a display of Elfquest books in the library, and I was hooked, I've been an Elfquest fan since.  They are still one of my favorite graphic novels to read (I've also enjoyed the regular books they have come out with...and one of my greatest wishes is that Wendy Pini someday finishes the tarot deck she started for it!)

I've gathered a handful of random titles over the years, and I really enjoy reading comic versions of books I like.  Hubby got me the comic for Patricia Briggs' books, and I found one of the Anita Blake comics.

One I really like also is The Gods of Asgard (by Erik Evensen), which is a comic version of the major Norse Myths....stories I've read in many forms, but it's neat to read them in comics too.

I love Manga, but I don't own hardly any.  When I was in high school, I knew a lot of people who read Japanese, so they had Manga that I could only understand the pictures on, but still I was fascinated (old Ranma 1/2 was probably my favorite).

Comic style (especially the style of Elfquest, which is considered almost a hybrid of American comic style and Manga) has definitely influenced my art style and preferences.  In art classes I was always told I drew things too 'comicy' (because that was how I learned to draw lol tracing comics), and I still love a bold line filled in with bright colors.

Me, I'm a DC fan and have been as far back as I can remember. [Edit To Add: It didn't hurt that I was learning to read about the exact same time the '60s Batman TV series was taking the airwaves by storm!] My next door neighbor growing up was one of those collector geeks you read about; he had somewhere north of two thousand comic books. He had quite a bit of Marvel as well, so I was well exposed to FF, Spider-Man, and the rest but my favorites were always World's Finest (Supes/Bats), Justice League, and The Flash.

I have to say that Marvel has done a much better job with their cinematic adaptations, on the whole, esp. Iron Man and Captain America. But I thought that Wonder Woman was awesome and Justice League was at least serviceable.

Yes, as a Marvel fan, I also read DC growing up (as well as Mad Magazine and other stuff at the Corner Store). Have you seen the DC Universe stuff that they are doing on TV? I have not had time to watch much of it, the Arrowverse or whatever they are calling it. I have some friends that are DC fans and they say that the DC Universe on the CW is pretty good. I think that they are doing a big Crisis On Infinite Earths multi-hour crossover special soon. Anyway, I watched some of The Flash stuff on TV and liked it. I am still waiting for my favorite DC secondary character to appear in Live Action- Miracle Man. If I were more of a DC fan I might have binge watched these shows. I just do not have the time and energy to do it. Still, it is a good time to be a comic book superhero fan. Lots of good stuff being done in a variety of media.

I've seen one single episode of the Supergirl series on streaming; I don't have cable or satellite TV and spend precious little time watching OTA (True story: On 9/11 I was awakened by a phone call from my mother telling me about the terrorist attack. I turned on the TV and watched a little of the news. Sometime between then and June 2002, my TV broke...that's the next time I tried turning it on! That's how much TV I watch.).

I do collect movies, though. In addition to Wonder Woman, I was also very, very impressed with the recent Aquaman film.

Even though I'm hardcore Marvel, I'm addicted to The Flash on TV. I hear good things about the Supergirl series and have watched a few episodes; it certainly has merits, but I wasn't hooked--and with so much superhero material on the big and small screens, one has to pick and choose which ones get your eyeballs.

The rest of the Arrowverse, particularly Arrow itself, I have no use for. The posturing on that show in a desperate attempt to seem gritty just makes my eyes roll. And Legends of Tomorrow is an unclean abomination.

I will be giving Batwoman a try, however. Because lesbian.

We watch these, and I have mixed feelings about some of them.  I actually like Legends, and definitely enjoy Flash (though I absolutely snort at the new "I'm the only one fast enough to save the day" intro bit...as about every other episode features someone else who is faster, and there are a million different speedsters).  Arrow has gotten a bit tedious for me, and there is something about Supergirl that I just can't get into (I really had to work to watch the first bit, and then I lost interest again)

We have watched a bunchl of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stuff (I had to edit that sentence twice while looking a the wiki-list....as I realized we haven't watched as much as I had thought lol).  We really enjoyed Agents of SHIELD and Luke Cage.  I liked the villians in Jessica Jones more than I liked the good guys.  Daredevil and Iron Fist we pretty much only watch to know what is going on in the crossover episodes.  Inhuman, the Gifted and Punisher are on our list to watch (so many shows, so little time lol)

How could I forget about Elfquest? My public library had them too, rebound with those round plastic comb-spines (or maybe they came like that, IDK). Great high-fantasy stuff, with some surprisingly complex themes. I haven't read any in years, but I can still remember some favorite scenes.

The Inhumans?? NOOOOOOO! Don't do it to yourself! I hate-watched every episode simply because I couldn't believe how awful it was, from the awful sets, to the awful acting, the awful writing, and other awfulness beyond measure. It was like watching a train wreck; I couldn't look away.

Seriously, it's that bad.

Plastic comb spines don't sound right....my copies are all softbound, but our library had hardbound a lot of them (some of my copies are old library copies I found the the booksales!)

I think that the more complex themes are part of what I really liked about them, especially as I grew up.  I definitely feel that some of my thoughts and ideas about love and relationships were influenced by the way different things were handled in the books (as well as platonic-love relationships).

Is it bad that this made me want to watch it more?

Hubby always tells me I have horrible taste in things, but sometimes it's definitely a "oh, I wonder how bad they can make it?  Can they top this?  Hmm, yes, yes they can!"

That is precisely what compelled me to watch this. In which case...enjoy!
