Though mostly I'm curious what your idea of a "realistic" portrayal of a woman with godlike powers is.

I honestly have no idea, but I think that'd be a great jump-off point for a new character and new stories; maybe 'believable' would have been a better word choice than 'realistic.'  I guess my main concern, will she benefit from decent character development and good writing, else why bother.
I do like the character design.

I have a problem with this, and I don't.

On the one hand, Thor is a male name (and still very much in use in, say, Iceland), so it's kind of jarring--akin to having a guy assume the role of Jane in Tarzan and still calling him Jane. Having a woman assume the name and mantle of Captain Marvel doesn't carry that same mental dissonance.

Second, Thor is drawn from a historical deity who is unambiguously male. So that's quite a liberty to take.

But to that second point, the Thor of Marvel is so far removed from mythology's Thor that I'm not sure it matters. And to the first, a little gender-bending dissonance is probably a good thing.

And I think the impulse to update/reinvent comic book characters (many of the marqee ones date back to the 1930s or so) to make them more inclusive and reflective of our society today is generally a good one, when the updating/reinvention is done thoughtfully.

But what I really want to know is: If she fights Storm, who would win??

I would agree with this.  My question is, if they are going to appropriate from Norse Mythology anyway, why not make Heroines from Freyja or Sif?  Maybe the Valkyries?

And imho, Thor would own Storms ass. :)

Sif and Valkyrie are already heroes.

Freyja's currently one of the three goddesses ruling Asgard.

I can't express my disgust with this news sufficiently. It's the epitome of Negro Sidekick Syndrome: sidekick of color gets their moment in the spotlight, and then when the world is restored to its Right Order and the *real* hero is back in action, sidekick fades back into the background. (See James Rhodes--Iron Man--War Machine)

If they were going to leave Sam Wilson as Captain America and let Steve Rogers fade into the background, then it would be amazing news. But they won't. So it's just more tedious also-rans.

(For an amazing Cap turn of events, see the storyline that revealed that the Supersoldier Serum was tested first on black soldiers. I never read the run--I couldn't stomach the art--but the idea is brilliant. If Marvel had had a permanent replacement for Steve Rogers emerge from that, that would have been tremendous.)

The reason why so many of us love Storm, despite her being esthetically incorrect, is because she's the one and only Storm--an amazing character in her own right, not a substitute, second-rate version of a white superhero, to be patted on the head and dismissed when the *real* (white) hero resumes their rightful mantle, as they always do.

And yes, Thor would defeat Storm, but he could *never* "own her ass." Anybody who thinks that, doesn't know Storm!
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Jeez, hadn't even thought of that. I'd assumed that when they talked about a new series launching that it was going to be like the alternate universe where Peter Parker is dead and Miles Morales is Spider-Man.

Truth: Red White and Black was pretty awesome but it wouldn't have made any sense to have a "replacement" Captain America emerge from that because it's contemporaneous with WWII. Do you mean after Cap went MIA? Or do you mean in a modern setting with him coming out of retirement? (Also because it was originally outside of continuity, though I'm glad they brought it in, because Bradley's grandson Patriot was terrific in Young Avengers.)

Ahhh I didn't read the article carefully enough. The title talks about a new series but in the article it says Sam Wilson is taking over in Captain America #25 with no mention of why that's happening.

Actually (and the last time I'm replying to myself :D) here is an article from Marvel itself about the upcoming switch.

Quote
Robbed of his superior strength and vitality, Steve Rogers must surrender his blues for a sturdy cane. He’s not about to fade away just yet though. The old maxims hold true: If dead men declared the war and old men talk about it, a young man must rise and continue the fight. If Steve Rogers can no longer hurl his mighty shield, then he’ll hand it to one who can carry it across the battlefield, above the clouds, to greater heights than ever before.

snip snip

Quote
He’ll also tutor Sam in how to throw the shield, a skill that’s deceptively difficult for the new Cap to master. So Steve will continue to be a vital part of the series moving ahead. And Steve is completely supportive of Sam as his hand-picked successor—the only replacement Captain America ever to be chosen by Steve himself.

Since I haven't read it, I didn't realize that it was out of continuity originally; I'm glad they rectified that.

And you're right, of course, about the time problem...unless they pulled some stunt wherein something reaches back in time and pulls a black supersoldier into our era. Which I don't recommend; there's been way too much convoluted, confusing characters-from-another-time crap going on. (see the X books)

If the effects of the serum pass down through children you could have a descendent of those soldiers take up the mantle as well.
