"Grimm's Fairies" by Ty Hulse
« on: August 03, 2014, 01:18:44 pm »
I recently discovered this neat website about fairy tales by folklorist and fiction writer Ty Hulse, who's apparently planning a Kickstarter for a new book.

Has anyone heard of this person before, or read their previous work? What did you think?

I hope I started this thread in the right section. Sorry mods if I didn't, please feel free to move this if so...

Yeeeeeah no. I have no opinions on this person as a creative writer, bc I've never read any of hir stuff; they might be amazing, idk. But speaking as a folklorist, this person's understanding of fairy tales and folklore is... problematic, to say the least. (Archetypes? REALLY?) Again, that doesn't mean that their creative work isn't good or worthwhile--people can do all kinds of stuff with folklore that wouldn't hold up as scholarship, and that's totally fine! But again, as a folklorist, they seem to have a pretty shallow and surface-y understanding of the genre. They seem to have picked up a few terms from scholars like Propp (i.e., Donor), and added a bunch of stuff that doesn't really work.

If you want a good online resource about fairy tales, I refer people to D. L. Ashliman's sites:
