Online Witch College?
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:39:14 am »
Hi all, firstly the term "witch college" sounds kind of dumb to me (and a bit Harry Potter), but I`m wondering what the general consensus is on sites like this one: http://www.workingwitches.com/

The lessons actually look pretty interesting/good, but since it costs money I definetly don`t want to do it unless it`s actually worth my time.  The only reason I started looking into a college/school format is because as great as the internet is, there is SO much information.  Half of it is worthwhile and half of it is "you`ve got to be kidding me" kind of material.  It would be nice to have a collection of at least mostly reliable/somewhat professional/scholarly information, but I don`t know if an online education place is where I would find that, or if I`m better off continuing to scower the internet for books and other resources.

What do you guys think?  Thank you!!

Sacred Mists has a very mixed reputation. There's an excellent thread from the archive board of the Cauldron about some of the issues you might want to think about. (The thread is five years old - when'd that happen? - but a lot of the basic issues discussed there are still relevant.) The thread's over here.

I've also got two essays on my website (part one and part two) that talk about things to consider if you're looking at online teaching resources.

In general, I think most people can do much much better - certainly for general intro info and background - reading widely and finding an active forum with a range of resources/approaches/etc. (like this one!) - than with most of the online witchy schools.

(And in terms of Sacred Mists, I see that some of the things that make no sense to me still make no sense: for example, they don't appear - from the public info - to teach circle casting until very late in the 2nd degree - how does that even work? And likewise, there's more of an emphasis on magic than religion early in the 1st degree, which is one of my pet peeves in general.)

Now, that said, in the last couple of years, there have been some specialised projects using online technology that are doing some interesting things. However, the ones that seem to be doing the most good seem to be tightly filtered (they're not teaching EVERYTHING, they're focusing on a few specifics, or the work of a single instructor) and they're taking a lot of care to only do things online that are suitable for online.

(In other words, they're extremely up front about exactly who is teaching, what they'll be teaching, they're offering material or resources that are not otherwise widely available, they're not attempting to teach an entire religious and magical practice, including parts that are extraordinarily hard to teach solely online, and so on.)

Ah!  Thank you so much, this info is wonderful.  At the moment, then, thinking it`s maybe online witchy school is not the best option (not to mention I have actual school to attend to).  However, your Seeking blog looks amazing, I`ll definetly be looking it over the next few days. :)

Seen it but have no experience, but go right ahead if you are interested in such. There also is Wicca.org that offers individual courses, however please note their classes are $200 based on an actual "School of Wicca". Best that I use so far is Universalclass.org that has such classes such as "Magick Basics" for $40 that I am taking, they have Wicca 101 for only $35, and many Reiki courses. Do not forget free materials like from this site, perhaps the Theosophy site and one called english.Grimoar.cz for free stuff.
