2019 Donation Drive

It's time for our annual Server Donation Drive! We need to raise at least $650 (same as last year) to keep The Cauldron's server online for another year. Please help! Either hit that Paypal button to the right and make a one-time donation in any amount or set up a monthly Bronze, Silver or Gold Donor subscription. You can find more info in this message!

Donations as of 13 Sept 2019: $656 donated. $6 more our minimum goal! Let's beat last year's total of $99 more than the minimum!

Note: This total is updated manually, usually once a day

* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Could just be me - something is giving me grief today, but I can't tell if it's the wet-new version of Firefox that just updated, or the latest NoScript add-on which ditto, or stuff Randall's been tweaking here, or some combination thereof, or what.  (Too much new, all at once, makes it hard to bughunt.)

Thanks for providing an alternative link - hopefully one or the other will work for me, if not immediately, once the renovational dust has settled.

The original link crashed Firefox (it did that before, too, even though all I got was the error page!), but the second one was fine.  I'm thinking that the folks at Mozilla, in their haste to comply with their policy of getting new stuff to the user ASAP instead of having it languish in process for months (something I'm usually okay with), released Firefox 13 before it was really ready.  (... 13?  did I miss noticing a release or two?  Or did I somehow - this happened to JFP a while back, too - somehow get on the list for getting the betas instead of the regular upgrades?  That'd explain the grief I'm getting, anyway.)

Not sure why.  I just tried it and it worked fine for me.  I've listed it at other sites and no one has remarked on it not working for them.

http://www.pauldevereux.co.uk/html/body_leylines.html is what comes up in the address bar at times but that one has errored out on me in the past.  But you might try that one.

Justy a note to add:

I just tried it and both worked fine so hopefully the second one will allow you to see it.

Yep, it worked for me too! WOO!

Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could pick up for my bookshelf?

The Modern Antiquarian: A Pre-Millennial Odyssey Through Megalithic Britain by Julian Cope leans more towards the archaeological approach, but is a really good guide to megalithic sites.  If you ever get a chance to attend one of Julian's book signings take it.  He does do speaking tours relatively regularly, but I'm not sure how often he goes further afield than the UK.  (Having worked in a shop where Julian did a signing, I'm biased, because he's a lovely chap.  Easily my favourite author on a personal level.  Along with Graham Norton, who is also adorable.  But I digress).

Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld by Patrick Harpur may be the kind of thing you're after.  It's highly possible you won't agree with his interpretation/philosophical approach, but even without that it's a nice collection of folklore and Fortean events.

Hopefully that's the kind of thing you're after.  As people have said, this is remarkably broad!  If there's any specific areas or eras you're interested in, let me know and I'll see if I can think of anything.

Remember those old Arthur C. Clarke TV shows that talked about ley lines and standing stones and ancient witchery in the British Isles?

I really, really want to immerse myself in things like that.  Old folklore and divination and supernatural stuff that doesn't necessarily have to be ghostly, but more the magical side of England and the rest of Britain.

Does anyone have any suggestions for things I could pick up for my bookshelf?

Thanks!

kat.

I didn't see that show, no, I'll have to search for it on You Tube... it sounds wonderful!

Can't suggest any books for you, sorry,
but you might like this website

and it might interest you to know there's a chap called Simon Costin who is trying to raise money to open a museum of British Folklore.

If I can think of any more, I'll add them later.

Sorry for the late reply-- I've been on my honeymoon!  These books both sound very interesting.  I read the reviews for the Daimonic Reality, and was a little iffy about buying it... but the Megalithic Britain looks very promising.
